Apart from Ford, who else made hi-comp police heads back in the day
A friend has a stock looking head with the same (or very similar) combustion chambers to a police head; it has various numbers, like part numbers, in small font cast on the top. Did Napa or other such companies offer stock looking police heads back in the day?
He wants $200 for it so thinking of buying rather than going for a Snyder.

Two things to check. Be sure that it hasn't been milled enough to allow the piston to hit the head (like the one in the picture) and look for cracks. Pay particular attention to where the arrows are in the attached picture. You should probably run a Model B head gasket to match the shape of the combustion chamber. How about a picture of the other side?

Charlie, do you mean that the head I posted above has been milled too much, or the head you posted? I put a photo of each side above.

.040 is a good quench factor, quench is the space between the top of the piston and the head.

Todd Buttermore's Snyder heads are high quality new castings, for 100 bucks more what you buy will be crack free, buying used period stuff is a crapshoot..That being said, some used period heads are cool, like a winfield red 7 to 1 ..Todd is making these now too..

Snyder's heads are great except for the fact they are sold green...must be milled before installing which adds another $50 plus time and hassle. If Snyder's were buy and bolt on I may have gone for one instead.

All that was necessary with the 5.9 heads that I use was to bolt them on and torque until it held .

Snyder heads are plug and play..bolt the on out of the box.
But lets play..say you had to shave one, still better than buying a used one if its cracked |

I took my 6:1 Snyder head to the NAPA machine shop and the guy was surprised at how straight it was.

Wasn't the problem with crooked Snyder heads corrected back when it was discovered? I thought I read about that a while ago.

Discussion about Snyder's heads issues here:
https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showt...green+head+tod "I would have it checked for straightness, as not only my one, but several others I’m aware of weren’t flat. Several lost gaskets." "I bought a 6.0 head from Snyders and the shop told me it was far from straight."

Snyder has been in business over fifty years,Buttermore is casting all kinds of stuff right now.I doubt that Snyder wouldnt make good if in fact you found you had recieved a bad head from them..

"I also set the head on my bare block with out a head gasket and it rocked back & forth! It was warped several thousandths & had to be milled. Snyder's offered to ship another head but the first on took three weeks to arrive. After talking to them I had the head milled & sent them the bill and was reimbursed." Back to the topic of my decision to buy an original hi-comp for $200 rather a new Snyder for $325...the numerous reports of warped green heads, such a the thread above, played a role. How can I ignore such information when making a decision? The other thing in my case is that the head I'm buying is being supplied by the engine guy who's doing my engine...if the head is cracked and fails he will also hopefully step up to the plate.

Re: Apart from Ford, who else made hi-comp police heads back in the day
A young man was selling his grandfathers 28 tudor and showed a box of parts in the ad..I spied this with my little eye and made an offer.Being a shrewd businessman the lad countered 25 dollars higher,I couldn't get the money out fast enough.
It cleaned up real nice, very little scale,no wear..its an authentic pre war winfield 7 to 1 wedge ..what do you think its worth? |

The lad should have looked at the box, seen "Winfield" on the head then gone to Google and Ebay. The for profit sector of the Model A hobby is a bear pit...no place for lambs.

Re: Apart from Ford, who else made hi-comp police heads back in the day
Not quite sue what you mean..I made a fair offer,he countered and I met his counter.I also bought an ansen dual carburetor intake from him, once again at a fair price,he was going to throw the parts in with the car. I inspected the '28 tudor for him and appraised it as a real nice repainted survivor, convinced him to raise his price, which he ultimately got.Maybe other folks operate in a 'bear pit' but I don't..
