Default Don't buy "anything" from MIKES Speed Shop Inc.

Over the years we all tend to get a feel for who we are talking with on the other end of the phone..... most times we are right, and then - well - occasionally we are WRONG

There is an advertiser here on the BARN that goes by the name of Mikes Speed Shop Inc. in Kanappolis N.C. who seems to enjoy taking peoples money and not providing the parts & or services he contracts out for.
my case in point:

late last Summer I was searching for someone to rebuild the shocks on my model A' coupe and I had done a fair amount of research of people that advertise being able to rebuild shocks. Ok, I know there are others too, but I chose this guy from E-mails and also phone conversations. MY shocks were NOT original A', but probably 35 or 6 style - complete, working, not leaking, and I figured that since my coupe was not original that these would work just fine for me.

WE agreed on a price, I shipped them down to him last September with a check to cover the entire cost of the rebuild & restoration & return!!!
Phone calls and E-mails have gotten me no where over the past 7 + months, and all I ever get in return is.... should ship by the end of the week, or the end of the month; on these dates he responded to me
9-22-16 I'll get on them next week
12-27-16 should ship next week
1-24-17 almost done
2-13-17 should ship by the end of the month
2-23-17 should ship by the end of the week
3-21-17 should ship by the end of the week
4-10-17 (today) I get no response to my E-mail

So, I am out the shocks, I am out the money that I paid him up front for the work that has not been done ($630) and now it seems that I need to start looking for another set of shocks to rebuild (or buy the new reproductions) when it would have been much cheaper to have done this from the start. I am posting this so that others can be warned of this guys business practices, and hopefully no one else will get scammed by him.

Maybe someone that lives close by him can stop in and pick up your shocks for you?

I would inform Ryan about this. I see his part ads here in classifieds. Maybe he will consider banning him here if he does not come through with delivery of your parts, and/or return of your $$$'s.

I am not sure who is selling reproduction shocks these days, but if it happens to be M&S, or someone who took over that business, beware of those. I got scammed by them years ago. Sent them a nice set of 35 cores to be rebuilt. The owner called and talked me into buying four of their reproduction shocks and he would trash my originals rather than have me pay postage to get them back. Those repros leaked from day one after installing them. Wound up pulling those off and getting Bill Wzorek to rebuild several sets of 35 shocks for my cars. They have worked perfectly, and are still on my cars.
Due to personal health issues, Bill decided to give up his shock rebuilding business, and trained Andy Falandes to take it over.
I met Andy last year at Hershey and he will get any of my business in the future if/when I need more shocks rebuilt. Andy is not into doing anything on computers, so you would need to call him for details on getting any work done.

I had a similar experience with Mike's Speed Shop about a year ago. I learned my lesson!!!! My advice is DO NOT EVER do business with him!!!
He never did send me what I paid for.

Hmm, this greatly concerns me. I sent him my steering box for rebuilding a couple weeks ago. So far he has been communicative and we are within the promised timeframe.

My father sent a set of shocks to Mike last year for his '35 pickup. Got them back when promised, installed and they are working fine so far. Maybe a help issue??

It sucks then there is bad service. 5-6 months for shocks is getting up there. When in business do you say your losing confidence. 1% is just people that always complain, 5-10% questionable practice, 20% well something needs to change.

I once used 5star out of CA. Good not cheap.

Bill Wzorek was the best. Honest setup and great quality. I'm sure it's the same. Where I'd go first.

There are guys out there that will provide a set of rebuilt Model A shocks for less than $400 for a set and you don't have to provide cores. They will also send you the exact ones correct for the date of build of your Model A as there are subtle differences. The guy I bought several sets from is named John Holland of Ohio. Turn around is a few weeks.

There was a guy recently building reproductions that are as good as original Henrys but he got 2x as much as rebuilt originals. I wouldn't consider any older repros as most likely they were built to not be rebuild-able. Check over a the Model A forum for the latest. I haven't followed it much since I sold one model A. I have my 2nd and last model A for sale now!

I actually took off the shocks and sold them separately before selling the cars. Didn't figure having them would add $500 to the selling price of the car. Buyer didn't know whether it had shocks or not. Frankly I couldn't tell the difference with or without as those springs are so darn stiff anyway.

I wonder if that is the same as Yankee Mike? Seems I had trouble with slow shipping of paid for parts from him a couple years ago.

I recently bought a part from Yankee Mike and was very pleased with the whole transaction.
I'd be surpised if it's him!

This is different Mike. It is not Yankee Mike. Yankee Mike does not rebuild shocks. He mostly sells parts and restore his cars.

I am having problems using the Barns contact page; once it is filled out and I press send, my computer tells me that it is forbidden and the page will not send. Is there anyone out there that can send Ryan a message and have him read my original posting regarding this subject? Don't know what else to do?

Does anyone here know if this guy ever set up at "Charlotte auto fair" ? I bought a few items from a guy who had a nice brand new vendor trailer there and also had trouble getting a refund . I called and told him the tail pipe extensions did not match and neither did the machined dash and glove box doors. He said send them right back and I did. I had a H - - - of a time getting my money back, after many phone calls a FEDX envelope showed up at my door step with all cash in it. I knew a fellow in the early V8 club as well as a guy who works in Hendricks fab shop who may have paid him a visit as a last resort ! Not funny to get ripped off by anybody. I would hope he is no longer in business.
