Default strange gearbox ID

I bought this side shift box thinking that the guts would fit into an earlier top loader box, but it has a way too small input shaft where the clutch spline is.
It has a part number on the side shift cover 8A-7222, my books only cover up to 1947 so I don't know what it is.
Would any one know or recognise the box.
OH, and its for sale cheap.
thanks Lawrie

Any casting numbers on the top of the transmission case?

I will look this morning,
It seems strange that it has what looks like the same size gears inside ,but a small input shaft spline where the clutch fits.

That's pretty much what the innards of a '49-50 box are...early Ford with smaller input and I think loose bearings rather than caged in the cluster. Aftermarket even made a slightly altered Zephyr gearset for it.

Bruce ,thanks, The input shaft has 1 inch x ten spline for the clutch plate,
So maybe if I get a clutch plate to fit ,and change the mainshaft the rest of the gearset should fit into an early top loader (33 ),with the relevant forks and top housing.
How would the small 10x 1 inch input shaft stand up to the torque of my old 33 babbit engine,or the 99a thats in at the moment,I suppose that if it came from a later ford with an 8ba it would be OK.

Don't think you can use the small input shaft. It takes a smaller ball bearing that won't fit the front of the case. Plus you'd have a problem with the clutch release bearing and pressure plate.

This is pretty well explained in the old Don Francisco HRM article on Zephyr gears...that adaptation was done with special cut down input gear. I've never really messed with this late model stuff, but I think other gears are swappable...late cluster has to be used with its own bearings and hardware. '49-50 only...gear teeth changed about 1951. Probably not really worth messing with, but since you have it dump out the innards and see what spares you find in there!

It did. What is a Tank Fairlane?

Looks like the trans in my '53 Courier.

Lawrie , it can be done with a little lathe work, if it is 49- early 50 with same helix on main shaft. I used pre 49 main shaft ( torque tube drive), put a sleeve on front end to suit bearing in input shaft. Sleeve front end of input shaft to suit early seal and bearing. A little care is needed with this sleeve because there is not much metal where the circlip grove is. Better to machine outer part and circlip grove once sleeve is fitted. Us later clutch disc.
