if you look in the Fastener handbook this is truly how the originals were shaped, odd as that looks. But I am sure the originals were natural rubber and more flexible.

It still seems like an odd design. The 28-29 bodies were assembled by Ford but not acually stamped out by Ford. Who knows designed this piece.
