Default Location of oil pressure sending unit

I'm getting ready to install my '51 Merc engine in my '51 Ford. The fitting on the canister filter was different on the Merc, so I put the Ford canister on it. Since the engine was on my test stand, I scrounged some fittings in order to hook up the mechanical oil pressure gauge. Now I want to put the stock sender back in and it seems to close to the canister to fit. I think I must have left something out that has since been misplaced. Anybody have a diagram of how this goes together? Or maybe a close-up picture of the stock setup.

Are these the fittings you are using? (the fitting photo may have be originally posted by 51merc) Not sure these help much.

That's the fitting that came on the Merc engine. It was cracked and leaked a bit. The one on the Ford (a very original car) was different. It was "squarish" where the Merc one is "roundish". I think that diagram solved my problem, though. It looks like I have to give the fitting another quarter turn so it points up. Thanks.

This is the layout for the Ford setup.
The sending unit is mounted horizontally.
If you are using an original sending unit mounted horizontally pay attention to the embossed arrow on the cover. It is supposed to be mounted with the arrow facing UP.
Has something to do with gravitational forces affecting proper operation of the gauge.

"51MERC-CT", I think you're right. I've found a factory diagram and appears the Ford sending unit IS mounted horizontally. I appear to have all the same parts that are shown in your diagram, but they just look lkie they won't fit. I'll pull it apart tomorrow and see where I am. Thanks for the diagram.

I am kinda amazed that the Ford and Merc pressure sender set ups are so different. I wonder why this was?
