New spark plug numbers
I went into an Advance Auto Parts today to buy some new spark plugs. I was able to buy off the shelf 4 of the Autolight p/n 3076 at $2.19 each.
I asked if they carried the Champion W18's. No they don't because that number has been replaced by Champion p/n 518. I also asked about the Motocraft plug TT10. No on this as well because they have been replaced by Motocraft p/n SP488. They could order these for next day delivery at their store. Pricing was around $7.00 each. Has any Ford Barner used any of these new part numbered plugs? Any feedback on how good they are? |

I use Autolight 3077 in the 'A' .. I've always liked Autolight sparklers.. They work well in Fords and Chryslers..

Re: New spark plug numbers
I also just did some Internet Googling on the Interchange Part Numbers for the Motorcraft SP488 and came up with these spark plugs as well :
AC 78S C73 C75 C77 C77L Champion W10 W14 W18 W20 Autolite 3076 Hex-15/16" Reach-5/8" Thd-7/8-18 Non Resistor Some other Part Numbers: Motorcraft 88 SP488 TT8 TT10 Prestolite 78-10 78-8 Looks to be no shortage of vendors with a spark plug for the touring Model As. |

Re: New spark plug numbers
I've been using the Champion W-16Y and they've been performing very well. They look a little like the Champion 3X, but at a fraction of the cost.

Re: New spark plug numbers
I recently swapped Champion W-18s gapped at .035" in for repro 3Xs gapped at .035" which were running a little too cool in my engine (4" bore, 5.9 head, Stipe B cam). Seems to be running smoother particularly on acceleration from low speeds but who knows. Have only put 105 miles on them and have not checked them for heat range suitability yet.
"No they don't because that number has been replaced by Champion p/n 518." Yer parts guy needs more edumacation on not being a wise ass, the stock number switch to 518 occurred a long time ago but W-18 is still stamped right on the plug. Would he have even been able to find a cross reference if you had brought in a W-18 and asked for 4 more? Likewise, the Motorcrafts still are stamped TT-10 and Autolites are still stamped 3076. |

Re: New spark plug numbers
I run the W-18 plugs gapped at .035 with a 5.9 head ,Winfield 3/4 race cam and dual updraft B carbs. The heat range is 7 and they run clean.

Re: New spark plug numbers
There use to be a parts store and machine shop here like James mentions, I wish that we still had it. The old parts men were like real mechanics, they seemed to know what you needed.

Re: New spark plug numbers
Thanks for all the comments on the best plug. Trying to keep the"A" looking original. Will go with the 3x's gapped at .035. Cluck

Re: New spark plug numbers
LOL Between the last post and this one, those numbers could have changed again and am sure the prices have too! Still good information.

Re: New spark plug numbers
A few years have passed since I started this thread. Some new info out there is that some of the new 3X repos are not as well constructed as the originals. I have had some new 3X ‘s fail with the internal contact breaking internally. The plug looks to be perfect but miss fires...... Often intermittently making you scratch your head on what is happening to your engine to cause the lack of power and a miss. Good idea to carry a spare spark plug on a tour because of this.
Also a lot of us are now running the A’s with higher compression heads that like the spark gap to be reduced down closer to 0.030 for best performance. |

Re: New spark plug numbers
would the 3x's be better to use than the automate 3076 in snide high compression head?
