Default Heavy Oil & Shifting

I don't want to beat a dead horse over this as I've brought this up before a few times.....A question just occurred to me, though. Does heavy transmission oil in the winter time cause the gears to slow down quicker or faster in between shifts? I thought it would slow them down quicker. I put in 600W from Snyders and it's cold in Iowa now. Up-Shifting has become difficult and unpredictable. Down-Shifting is fine.

Yes, heavy oil wil slow the gears quicker. You would probably do good using a multi-grade. I use Lucas 85w-140 with good results.

That's 2 votes for the 85W-140. I've been thinking about changing that out. With that do you up-shift fast or slow? Double-Clutch?

Three votes for 85W-140. Ford recommended 10% kerosene in the transmission oil for cold weather. You can go that route but then you have to change back in warmer weather. Plus the modern transmission oil is better for the transmission. The transmission and rear end will last longer. The modern oils have additives that maintain the oil film.

I've read that before about the kerosene. Has anyone tried it in the last.....50....60 years? My math is lousy....how much would 10% be? No, I'm not actually going to try it.

10% is one part in 10. So 10 ounces of oil would have 1 ounce of kerosene added to it. 20 ounces of oil would have 2 ounces of kerosene added to it. I think the transmission holds one pint, which is 16 ounces. So you would add 1.6 ounces of kerosene to the transmission for cold weather. A little less than 1/4 cup. I don't think the 10% is very critical so anywhere near that amount would probably work.
