Question Missing oil breather cap

I was looking at a 30 Model A Tudor on Craigs List. Ad says motor rebuilt with high compression head. Ad also states owner has all receipts from engine rebuild. In one of the pics I noticed the oil breather cap was missing. I asked him if he replaced it and he said it just came off while driving and hasn't replaced it. Seems odd as it's a $5 item.
It is possible that there is too much pressure somewhere and it blew off? I was told to start the car and put the palm of my hand over the open breather pipe. If there is too much excessive pressure it could be piston rings or something else serious. I was told a little back pressure is ok. I'm throwing this out to the experts. Thanks, Smitty

My thought is if you don't take care of the small thing like a $5.00 part what else did he say he did not bother to do like change the oil put in antifreeze ? Little thing add up to big things!!!!

No, even with an extreme amount of blow by, there is no way it could have blown it off. Probably just fell off, which still shouldn't have happened. Like you said, to check for blow by, place your palm of the oil breather tube and feel for pressure. Excessive blowby is the result of bad rings and cylinder bores.

Thanks to everyone! The car is located about 2 hrs. from our place in Pa. We should be back up there 5/25/17. I don't know how to post a link to the Craigs List ad, but the car is listed under the Pittsburgh, Pa. area on Craigs List. I know there are several things that are incorrect about the car, but the idea of the engine & trans. being "rebuilt" fascinates me. And the starting price is the $12,995 not $15,000. Another $5 item I noticed missing is the steel gas line from the sediment bowl to the carb. Thanks again, Smitty
