If you are removing the rad w/o the shell you can leave the bar if I remember right. It is plain easier w/o the bar though. When I did my engine we left the shell and wiring and just moved it around. But we pulled the engine so the bar had to come out.

I just removed mine this weekend (it is in the trunk of my other car waiting to be brought to a shop to get rodded out.) The removal is fairly simple. I would recommend a few things.

1) Clear an area ahead of time and prepare the cardboard/padding on which you will place your hood. There is nothing worse than getting to that stage and not having a place to put the hood.
2) Place a nice think piece of cardboard between the radiator and the fan while you are preparing to remove the radiator. You may want to anchor this onto the fan (masking tape) so while you are removing the radiator you can't "bump" the castlenut and damage the radiator.
3) Don't forget to detach all the wires from the wire clips on the radiator. They also tend to "grab" the foot of the radiator... be careful here.
4) Place something under the car to catch the "drippings". Have some clean rags and some wet rags about in case you get coolant on your paint.

The whole removal took me about 1.5 hours... some of this was spent refilling my coffee mug. I will try to post a few photos (I haven't updated my blog yet to document the work but here are a few videos.)

Absolutely not necessary to remove the shelves.

I never removed them... although every time I remove the splash panel I think, "this would be a good time to remove those strips to clean them".
