Question New Blown Flathead

Will be building a new Blown engine. 3.312, 4-1/8 Scat stroker crank, running 5-6 lbs of boost.

Can’t find any Ross metric ring pistons in the size needed. Talked with Ross today and they have castings done, but machining won’t be done for 6-8 weeks. Talked with Scat and they are now making their own forged pistons Icon brand (part: IC626.std). The pistons are forged 4032 alloy with ductile rings, 1/16, 1/16, 3/16. Ross uses 2816 alloy with 1.5, 1.5, 3mm rings; moly coated top ring.

3/16 oil ring seems big

Anybody have any experience with ICON Premium pistons and rings, particularly with 5-6 lbs boost.

Thoughts

Anything SCAT offers is going to be an off shore item. If you cant wait for the Ross pistons then contact EGGE and use there solution cast three ring pistons they cast them and machine them in house the 3-5/16 diameter and the 4 1/8 stroke is usually in stock. They come with Grant brand rings which feature low tension drag. Egge pistons will handle that boost level as well. I know from experience their pistons are worth looking into.

I have used the ICON in a street hot rod flathead. Not blown. Forged in Mexico machined in US is what the gentleman at Scat told me. Very nice and zero issues.

I have used Ross in the past with no problems.
I am using Mahle now with gas port rings.

I've used Ross for most of my Ford Flatheads, have heard that Mahle makes good flathead pistons. I've talked with them at the PRI show - seem more than willing to work with whatever specifications you need.

As noted earlier, I do like the metric rings, moly coated options, etc.. These are all coming from foreign piston applications. You have to determine your rings first, then the bore size.

With Ross, I call them directly and work with them to specify the exact compression height, specific ring package, crown thickness (if blown), bore size (to match the rings), etc..

Regardless of who you use, it is very important that you determine the exact compression height you need for your crank, rods, block and heads - before you order pistons. I would not assume a stocking compression height will get your quench where you want it. Also, if you're running a heavily relieved block under boost, you might want to move the ring pack down a bit - to take some heat out of the top ring.

On our blown flathead Cadillac Bonneville engine the latest set of pistons were made by Diamond. Diamond makes great pistons, but you'll be paying for them!

Interesting conversation. I also used Ross with Total Seal rings and had to get them custom made. I believe it took an extra 3-4 weeks to have them made.

Any ever use Wisco automotive pistons? Back in my 2 stroker days, Wisco was the brand to use. I stumbled upon their site one time while looking for pistons. They are forged, but are more like a modern, short skirt type of piston.

I've used ICON in 348/409 GM engines. They were solid items.
