What movie has the best car chase? Also......

Bullitt is right up there but there are so many good chases, it's hard to choose a favorite.

Not really a chase but I love the scene in "O Brother, Where Art Thou" where a center-door T crashes through the burning barn - driven by a kid wearing a leather aviator helmet, sitting on a couple Wards catalogs, and with wood blocks strapped to his feet to reach the pedals.

Another good one in that movie is when the boys are picked up in a 33-34 Ford being chased by cops and driven by Baby-Face Nelson - who proceeds to machine-gun everything in sight...including cows along the road.

Bullitt for many reasons:
1. 1968 Muscle cars
2. San Francisco hills.
3. Steve McQueen
4. Bud Ekins

Bud Ekins also drove the 390 GT Mustang in Bullitt. Not sure how much Steve drove as well. He was also the guy who lays the motorcycle down in the movie. Bud taught Steve how to ride a dirt bike. Saw this movie twice at the age of 8.

I love that movie, I also love leatherheads, alot of great car and steam locomotive footage.

I haven't seen it in years but I seem to remember a pretty good chase scene in Thunder Road. I think it was a black '57 Ford moonshine car.

Couldn't have been a '57 because I recall some guy trying to talk the hero into upgrading from his flat-head to the new OHV motors. He wasn't having any of it, of course!

When the movie starts out, the hero (Robert Mitchum) is driving a 50 Ford with "a racing mill under his hood". Later he upgrades to a two-tone 57, the one he dies in ("the devil got the moonshine and the mountain boy that day" ). The bad guys tried to run him off the road at least twice, also in 57s (one of them black). There is a 40 coupe in the movie that previously belonged to Mitchum's character but he's never shown driving it. The revenuer (Gene Barry) drives a 57 Chevrolet. Mitchum's real life son played his younger brother in the movie.

Bullit for sure, and a really visceral experience when seen on a regular theatre screen. You actually feel yourself bracing for impact. They should require seat belts just for viewing it!

"Road to Perdition", (T.Hanks I recall) has many views of 30-ish cars. Many Model As were in it and I knew some of the guys whose cars were used. Low pay, long hours and some of the "make up" used to make them not so showy was not easy to remove, they say.

Just for fun...

After a delivery in the 1950 Ford, Mitchum's character gets paid $1,400 for 250 gallons of white lightning. That works out to $5.60 per gallon in 1958 dollars, which equates to over $46 in today's money. Legal booze probably would have been cheaper (and safer).

A gallon of 100-proof 'shine weighs around eight pounds so 250 gallons would weigh at least a ton. Add in another 3,000 pounds for the car and you've got quite a load, even for a hopped-up flatmotor. Course that ton in the trunk would produce some awesome traction.

Still my favorite movie from the rockabilly era, in spite of the gaffs.

Hands down best has to be Bullet, spectacular but believable. Plus as time goes on I admire all the Old Cars parked along the streets, when I first saw this movie those same cars where not so old.... 1973
