Transmission woes
I have a 50 Ford car with a stock 3 speed overdrive transmission. It grinds trying to shift into 2nd gear. I've been told that the syncros are the problem. To me this stuff dosen't look too bad. I'm interested in hearing any opinions on the quality of these parts. Should I replace them anyway or what else could be my problem.
Thanks, Andy Last edited by azandy; 04-09-2015 at 02:37 PM. Reason: larger pictures |

Re: Transmission woes
Be sure your clutch is adjusted with the correct pedal free play. If the gears grind after holding the clutch pedal down for at least a minute, the pilot bearing in the flywheel may be seizing the input shaft of the transmission, or the pressure plate is warped due to incorrect tightening to the flywheel.

Re: Transmission woes
The parts look ok at first glance. If you look at the post by MacVP on synchros you should see how the synchroniser ring should sit on the cone of the gear. From your pics it is impossible to judge how it sits.

Re: Transmission woes
If it makes a difference, the car is a daily driver and it ran great for the last 5,ooo miles and then last week it started making noise.

Re: Transmission woes
There was a resent article on synchros that pointed out they can look fine (and sometimes even measure out fine) and still not work. It has to be able to grab and hold the gear in order to synchronize the speeds and it has to do it almost instantly. So, it doesn't take much for there to be an issue.

Re: Transmission woes
Also check the free play of the second gear on the shaft as well as other clearance. excessive play can lead to problems.

Re: Transmission woes
What kind of gear oil are you using inthe trans? If you changed to one of the newer ones, that might be your problem. Also check the inside of the brass synchros for wear.

Re: Transmission woes
Now that I've got everything apart I'm going to replace the synchro stuff. I had been using the wrong gear lube, gonna switch to GL1 and check clutch pedal play and shift linkage for wear. Thank you Ford Barners !!!
