I believe standards and commercials ran the generator cut out and only the deluxe models had a regulator. The regulators were wounted on the drivers side top of the firewall. See the photos in my albums. The two small holes to the right of the oil breather, on the slanted portion of the firewall, are where the regulators mount.

This is my 39 pickup. I went with a regulator and a 12volt generator set up. However, to be "correct" you sould run a gernerator cut out for commercial and standard. This however will show the mounting area.

My 39 2 door had a cutout on top of the generator, but i have seen a few standards with a regulator mounted like the pickup in the picture. Whether someone changed them over or not i do not know.

Jim, The Ford V8 for '39 normally had a cut-out from the factory, but were fitted with a regulator and two brush generator at the dealership if the customer had ordered a radio. The position of the regulator would then be up to the installer at the dealership, so it may actually have been installed anywhere on the driver side. If you will have your car point judged, you will need a radio, and I woiuld suggest a position several inches outboard from where Seth mounted his regulator.

Early 39 standards had the option of a cut-out or regulator.
Later in production I think most came with a regulator.

You guys made me think I was wrong again! I went and hit the books again, and found that I was mistaken, but I wasn't wrong!!?? Actually, I was thinking that all radios were installed at the dealerships, and that was incorrect. Some cars were radio equipped from the factory, and if so, they were supposed to recieve the two brush generator & regulator from the factory also. In fact, there was a shortage at some assembly lines, and dealers did install those items early on in some cases. The three brush & cut-out did in fact continue for non-radio V8 Fords through the entire '39 model year. 1940 job one did awat with the three brush altogether.
Now as for location of the regulator, Early factory installations were on the vertical surface, and was changed to the slanted surface to combat the buzz noise in the cab.
This is interesting if your car has an original wiring harness: The factory regulator installations had a wiring harness made for it, while those without regulator were specific to cut-out, requiring a separate additional harness when installed at dealerships. Check your Rouge Ford to see which harness to determine factory or dealer radio.

That confirms the most important rula about Fords: Never say never or always!

It is not true that all "standards" were equipped with a cut out unless they had a radio. The fact is that near the middle of production Ford began to equip all '39 Fords with a regulator.

There should be dimples on the firewall for the regulator screws.

My thinking also. I would also think that the wiring hook ups to the reg is gonna somewhat dictate the mounting location
