Clunking noise when hand cranking.
https://youtu.be/XrZ47lEZm_8?si=xDQKOSJeadFWTqBZ
Clunking noise when hand cranking. Only noticed when I tested hand crank for the first time. No plugs installed. I am thinking this is not normal? Dan |

Re: Clunking noise when hand cranking.
Sounds to me like the crank slopping around in the guide on the front frame member as you switch from an up motion to a down motion with the crank. If so, perfectly normal.

I think you are right.
The pulley has slop and the sound it makes is identical And the sound is timed with hand crank on pull up and push down Thank You! Last edited by ddelproop; 01-12-2024 at 02:52 PM. |

Re: Clunking noise when hand cranking.
There can be play in places that are complicated to repair such as a rear cam bearing journal. The cam is constantly having changes in pressure applied to the cam lobes due to valve springs. The over center action as a lobe goes from open to close can cause movement in the cam if there is play in a journal or more. I would ask whether it makes noticeable slaps or knocks after the engine is running. Once things are turning at rpm, it may be less noticeable.
Model A blocks have no factory installed cam bearings. The rear one originally didn't have a hole drilled to that journal from the valve chamber. Ford published a service bulletin with instructions on how to drill a passage way there. The block can be modified for a bushing or bushings during overhaul if needed. I imagine a lot of them needed repair back in the day. |

I just replaced the head gasket as it was weeping oil with trace amounts of water in the oil and tested positive for exhaust gases in radiator fluid. I also had an exhaust leak The prev owner had mounted the Radiator 1/4 inch too high so I never had the chance to try the crank until I lowered the radiator a few days ago to how it was supposed to be installed. The engine is much quieter so I hear new things |
