Default Bushing removal on 47 steering box

Any one know how to remove the copper bushings on a 47 ford steering box ? I've got everything apart and have a rebuild kit with new bushings, but having trouble removing the old bushings. Thanks for any help.

You need to make a bushing driver, and drive them out. Requires a lathe. When you have installed the new bushings they will have to be honed to the proper size (machine shop). Good luck with your project.

Hot bone has it.....the housing will have to go a machine for align honing. Think about
having them remove and replace the bushings as well as do the honing. These guys
have the goodies at hand.

Bushing drivers are available for phosphor bronze & other bushings but they usually come in kit form with all sorts of head sizes and a common driver. They are pilot based with a good portion of the driving head fitting inside the bushing bore with just enough of a lip on the outside to catch the edge of the bushing. A single driver could be made on a lathe if you have one or if you have a friend that does. Some required reaming and some don't. You never know till after it's driven in.

You can do it yourself also, if you have access to a lathe. I just pressed the sector shaft bushings out of '40 steering box with the driver pictured in the photo. The smaller ID is 1.120 to fit inside the bushing, the next step OD is 1.180, which is a little smaller than the bushing OD of 1.195. I made mine out of 1.300 OD tube. The bushings are actually bronze. Then I honed the bushing to 1.125 to fit the sector shaft OD with the Lisle 2 stone wheel cylinder hone, about ($15.00) at McMaster Carr.

Now I have a brake wheel cylinder hone which I have used for the steering box and wheel cylinders, and the bushing driver for less than $25. See photo.

The 20 ton press will push those bushing out with no sweat. What I did not realize when I did the job, is that original Ford script sector shaft bushings from 1940 were still good, with no slop in them. I checked them with a telescoping hole gauge after I pressed them out, and the ID was very close to 1.125, the sector shaft OD. The "40 has about 42K on it. So, you may want to check those bushing before you replace them, like I should have done,
