Re: Does Your A Start Right UP?
When I put my A Zenith carb, and intake my car clicks right off. My B manifold and carb is a different story though.

Re: Does Your A Start Right UP?
Pretty good read. Have just two questions. In cold weather, should the GAV be opened extra initially to richen the mixture followed by closing back to 3/4 or so after warm up ? At what outside temperature should a T-stat be installed ? Welcome input.

Does Your A Start Right UP?
This is what I run year round. It came with a 160 degree thermostat, and it works great.

Re: Does Your A Start Right UP?
See post #43
Instruction manual says open GAV one turn on cold start, On My car 1. Open GAV one turn on cold start. 1a. set throttle to slightly open (one or two clicks after floor pedal starts to move) - leaving it closed will make it harder to start. 2. Pull choke for one or two seconds while engine is turning. (choke only works while engine is turning). (I see Utube videos where they choke engine while it is NOT turning). 3. Release choke and continue to crank usually engine starts after several turns. Holding choke more than two seconds Usually will flood engine. 4. If engine starts and then dies, open GAV another 1/2 turn or so and go back to step #2. 5. If TEMPERATURE is 20 below or colder then 2 turns of GAV may be needed to keep engine running. 6. Then close GAV (clockwise) as needed so it runs smoothly as it warms up. The purpose of GAV is to keep a cold engine running while it warms up. . Instruction manual says: 1/4 turn on GAV is normal when engine is warm. Depends on how carb was rebuilt. Last edited by Benson; 12-19-2020 at 07:37 AM. |

Re: Does Your A Start Right UP?
Humidity is very low here.
But used a scraper on inside and outside of windows at times. Used to hold a hand against windshield occasionally to melt frost while driving. Also would crack a window and/or the windshield to keep humidity from building up inside. Last edited by Benson; 12-18-2020 at 09:24 AM. |

Re: Does Your A Start Right UP?
I ave recently experimented with some gas/diesel mix, it was drained out of a diesel that got 1/2 tank of gasoline, it smelled more of gasoline so it went into the A (if it had smelled more of diesel it would have gone into my diesel)
In warm weather it was a little harder to start (lot more open GAV), smoked some and smelled like a diesel running, and until fully warmed up was a little sluggish, when it was in the 30s it was quite reluctant to start and smoked a lot, when I added gasoline till it was over 3/4 gas it started and drove normal, no smoking, but could still smell the diesel. I keep a wiper blade inside the car to clean inside of window when it fogs up |

Re: Does Your A Start Right UP?
I have put a gallon of diesel in as the last gallon on my A before in the summer to keep it from pinging with a super brumfield head. (I broke that head, so I don't any more).
My grandad said he ran his model A on kerosene (coal oil) many times. But you had to run it dry, and have that gallon of gasoline with you te get it restarted. An A will not start on kersosene, but will run on it once operating. |

Re: Does Your A Start Right UP?
Maybe the diesel fuel you guys run is different from what we have oe maybe it's the ethanol fuel but putting diesel in the petrol tank is a big no no. It will ruin an engine within a tank full and I do mean ruin

Re: Does Your A Start Right UP?
Cold start she cranks right over and ROARS TO LIFE.......… IF......... I get my hands and feet to coordinate all the puppeteer moves with the levers and choke and throttle.
Usually I flood it or kill the battery and have to repeat.
