Re: Tell us what your working on !
Well, I've currently got a customers 46 pickup gearbox pulled to bits for a rebuild, also got his diff awaiting fitment of the 3.54 crown wheel and pinion I purchased off of Tim Ayers [where is Tim- has he made the move to the new Barn?] Also got another customers 46 Merc in my shed which is getting an engine rebuild, then also got another mates 34 diff to install another 3.54 gearset into. All this to do, then maybe I can get back into the build up of my 286 for my 35. I swear one day soon I'm gonna retire from doing other peoples stuff, it is encroaching on my own projects. Brian

Re: Tell us what your working on !
Im putting a 38 panel body on a 39 ford PU frame. I have the body jacked up on stands and I am trying to get the frame ready to roll under it. I have rebuilt the front brakes and I am changing the master cylinder to a dual chamber. I have the steering shaft apart trying to piece together one that works. I have one outer tube that is rusted through on the bottom and one that is cracked in two at the switch.

Re: Tell us what your working on !
I'm working at re-restoring a '36 5W Coupe that I have had since the late 80's (if you can call what I did to it back then a 'restoration'). The work I did on it back then was enough to get it on the road, working with what I had which was not much. It was basically a pile of parts, most of which were unusable. In the intervening 20 years or so I was able to aquire enough parts to make a mostly as-original car and decided to take the plunge a couple of years ago. It is almost road-worthy again now with the correct chassis, engine, brakes, steering, and electrical system. Next comes a complete overhaul of the cosmetics.

Re: Tell us what your working on !
Finally finished the 40 Mercury Convertible Coupe, (Don't recommend anyone other than Daddy Warbucks trying it, parts very difficult and expensive) 49 2 door has a head bolt broke off in the block waiting for me to get it out, 48 Dodge B1-power wagon runs great but I am working on the cosmetics. Thanks for asking. Joe

Re: Tell us what your working on !
I am in the process of doing a frame off on my 1939 Ford Standard Coupe that I have owned since I was in high school in 1965. This was my daily driver for several years before being relegated to a storage shed and only driven occasionally.
I have now had the frame powdercoated and am slowly adding components as I get them rebuilt. Isn't it strange how much more slowly they go back together than they came apart?

Re: Tell us what your working on !
Working on my model A delivery, but with a 39 transmission and a Stromburg 48 car expect to see me from time to time. I also aguired the 38 pu I mentioned over the weekend, so I may have some questions there as I try to revive the engine and get mix parts from the other 38 I have located for a donor. Need to get it all running and assembled within about a month for resale. Rod

Have a good start on assembling a new project, a '38 standard coupe. Going back together stock with the exception of speed parts for the V8-60 and an overdrive. Photos follow. Still looking for a "60" emblem for the hood handle mount as in the b/w photos. The photo shows an "85" I need a "60" - Do you have one for sale?

Just finished installing a Sun RC-50 "Football" tach and EB-1 Transmitter in my '40 (without drilling any holes in the dash). Remember the days when everyone had to have one on their dash, whether they dragged or not?

I am building a 29 RPU with V8 running gear, shocks, brakes etc. VERY nice sheet metal, 59A/39box, nicely cut down K-Member, 35/36 rear, 32/36 front axle, unsplit wishbone, etc, etc. I had some serious help over the winter, most of the big work is finished and it's now a tangled mess of small things but I am extremely happy with how the car is turning out. I'm working on my 50 F-1 pickup. I've had it 20 years now and I finally turned the page and it's starting to go forward and be reassembled. I recently posted about my stuck valve saga. I'll bneputting the head back on later this week and will fire it back up! I will post again on my thread on how it came out.

Restoring a 50 ford 4 door, with flathead and OD tranny. Also working on a 51 ford 2 door, maybe putting a 55 y block and OD tranny in it. Not sure yet. Going to look at a 52 F2 pickup with original flatty and trans tomorrow. All this to help pay for a 30 coupe that's waiting for me to bring home and finish up.( with a nice merc flathead to build, that I have at the shop )

Re: Tell us what your working on !
I'm building a 28 A Tudor from bits gathered from far and beyond.
Boxed, lengthened and stepped A frame, C59A engine, currently stock, a sweet runner, with 36 trans, 47 rear with A spring, shortened torque tube & driveshaft. 4" dropped axle with split 34 bones and reversed eye spring, 39 brakes, 47 drums, lever shocks. Body came to me with a very bad 4" chop and most of the subframe missing, most of the roof missing, and LOTS of rust. I've spent about 9 months on bodywork, and still got a fair bit to go. Wheels are 35 16" wires with 5.25s and 7.50s. |

I just finished overhauling the radiator on my 36 tudor. Top tank was all beat up, so had to straighten it. Also, rodded the core and soldered a couple of leaks.

Re: Tell us what your working on !
I have a 38 panel, it is 99% complete, nothing is ever truly finished until its sold and gone, waiting for Illinois DMV to title, on my 4 th month of waiting. May rub the paint clean off polishing it. Took it to the drag strip, ran an 11.40, they promptly told me no more for you till you get a cage and fire suit, ran it around the block, did a big smoking burnout, 5 minutes later the police came and wanted to impound it, thankfully the 2nd lieutenant is a customer and a great guy but told me not to pull it out of the shop again. Is this what stir crazy is? Having all that, and not being able to drive it?

Re: Tell us what your working on !
Restoring a '37 slantback. I bought it in 1974, drove it about 10k miles and started restoration at 44k+ miles about 5 years ago. It set in my barn for many years. It is running again and have been doing minor body work, sanding, priming, etc. I did install '39 hydraulics and a '39 heater. The engine is a '39 24 stud. I am the second owner, very lucky to have a rust free car to work on. The original owner told me that a lady banged into the rear end on icy roads back in 1941. They locked bumpers and it pushed the tail light down bending the rear fenders. I think I have everything I need to finish the car except for time! 'Gotta keep wrenching.

'30 Pickup, boxed frame, rear spring behind axle, banjo with open drive shaft, t5, not chopped, full fendered, '32 style shell and hood, 8ba, not 100% completed but got it in epoxy primer for the summer so I can drive it and get the bugs worked out before taking it apart for paint. Have drove it about 65 miles thus far, here is a couple of pictures of the engine.

I recently finished stripping down a '49 F6, pushed the '62 Fairlane out of the garage, and pushed the '87 Tbird in. But this week, I plan on getting my frame rotisserie built for my F1 frame. I just wish I was as far along as some of you guys, lol.

Re: Tell us what your working on !
I'm about to try starting the '46 Merc flatty in my '39 Tudor. It's been sitting since 1982, but spins over, and I've already completely rebuilt the brakes, including adapting a dual m/c to the stock pedal assembly. Next up, if I can get it running smooth, is a new wiring harness, and I will drive the wheels off this thing just the way it looks (besides putting some proper bias-ply bigs and littles on, of course). |

Yea Bassman and thanks, its full sequential port fuel injection. So far no problems with it but to early to say if it will be trouble free and dependable. There isn't as much room in the valley as a person thinks, very tight fit. Vergil

Re: Tell us what your working on !
'35 Standard 5 window keep that has been in the family since '57. My Dad paid 195.00 for it and buying it about put him under financially. Car has never left the area of purchase. Have the dealer's '35 sales log, and the car and it's buyer are listed. Spinster teacher. Story is the furthest it was ever driven was to Lincoln, Ne. and back. She let her lawyer drive her there using the coupe. She wouldn let him go over 30 mph down and back. Dad said when he bought it, you could barely get two fingers in the exhaust pipe from all the soot built up. Replacing the engine after sitting for 35 years(no oil pressure). I think the car is haunted by the old maid who had it. As a kid I remember the car always stalling out or the carb catching on fire. When the pump gear gave out, I think she was pretty happy-the tube type tires on the wire rims didn't go flat once, so it sat nice and even and covered since 1975. Now as we put the different engine, it seems things aren't going to smoothly again. Been working on it for over a year and finally got the new motor fired up and running last nite(the new motor has been layoing in my Dad's shop for about 25 years. he bought a bunch of flattie stuff from a widow. her husband was a well known dirt track guy. anyway, this spring when we pulled a head off to check out the condition of the motor, it was all freshly rebuilt. and the builder stamped the date he rebuilt it and his name. it was rebuilt on 9/57!)

Re: Tell us what your working on !
I have quite a few projects but my primary one at the moment is my '39 V8 pickup. The front end has been rebuilt and I'm now just finishing up the engine.
Front end before... Front end after... Engine before... ...and current condition... ...and alongside one of my other big projects, a supercharged 4-banger... |

Re: Tell us what your working on !
In the final stages of restoring my 39 STD Coupe. Waiting on chrome plating and interior kit and it will be done. Thanks go out to folks like Kube who helped on running board cover installation, etc. The car now has a fresh motor and transmission, new black paint job, all new rubber, glass, rebuilt shocks, wiring harness, trunk and hood springs, and anything else that was needed. I have a set of draft deflectors and spider hubcaps that I also plan to install.

Working on my wife's '37 Slantback, was rough when found but cleaning up pretty well now. 2" wedge chop, new bottoms to everything, new front floors and tailpan, firewall and just about everything else. Starting the tear down for exhaust system and brake lines and then on to prep for epoxy, lizard skin and paint......

Re: Tell us what your working on !
Still a few things to finish on my 32 (avatar) but she is a running a driving car at the moment; I will be doing a little work on my 40 coupe after being on the road for over 6 years: pull the motor and trans to swap out the S10 4-speed for a 5-speed, do a couple maintenance items on my French block flattie while it's out, and change the 8" rear gear from 2:78 to 3:40; and probably do a little work on my 40 p-up project - it's not a flattie but will be an early 60s "look" and suspension but with a 4.3V6/5-speed combo.

Getting ready to swap a newly rebuilt 8ba into my '46 Tudor. Will also change out clutch and transmission. May replace column shift with late 50's / early 60's Hurst floor shift conversion and install tach at the same time.

The chassis work on my '39 1/2 Ton continues. Just found the correct 3-speed rebuilt trans. Hopefully by the end of the year I'll have the brakes, front and rear end all done. Then it's on to the steering!

Re: Tell us what your working on !
Struggling with my '36 slant. Working toward firing the engine for the first time...maybe next week. Still got to put the headlights and hood on and wire the front end, all electrics from the firewall back have been finished. Finished the spare and spare tire carrier today and striped the body. I try to spend at least one hour each day buffing chrome. Currently doing the beauty rings and hubcaps. They sure do look better after they have been bench buffed.

I have been working a a 34 three window over the last two years. Its been a long haul. The car had been a drag car and the body needed alot of metal work to get it to this orginial point. I started with the chassis and did the eng. trans. and quickchange rear. I just finished all the wood in the body. Getting ready to hang the doors and deck lid. They are painted and ready to install.

Year and a half restoration on a 39 Std. Coupe. Fresh rebuild on engine and transmission, new black paint job, and chrome. Only thing left is upholstery. You can tell when your restoration is near the end, when you pull the last parts out from under the bed.

Ron, got my cab back from Maaco today. Ashley Pike and crew did a great job. Cab wood from Dick spadaro fits nice. Had to trim the rear cab corners sheetmetal excess to fit the wood and sit flush. Will post pic's over the weekend.
Let me know about those fenders, was looking @ glass fenders for front and rear on my 39. Hope to have my Walt dupont flathead in the frame by Mem.Day weekend!! |

Nice 39 deluxe coupe (avatar) I bought from california last fall. Sweet running flattie, fired it up last Sunday and have a frozen water pump, so, pulling those for rebuild. Going to send the coil to Skip while its down. The car has new mohair interior and gorgeous woodgrain! I've owned/built a bunch of street rods and chevy muscle. This is the first stock old Ford. I'm liking it!

Re: Tell us what your working on !
I am just finishing up on our 1946 Ford PU. It once was fleet owned as it has a number 418 on the seat riser as seen in the attached photo. The interior still has all of its original factory paint. Notice my custom rear bumper. We use this truck on our farm and also in our property management business. It tows a trailer and it needed a good trailer hitch as well as a good rear bumper. It was in decent when we bought this truck 30 years ago for $300. I finallly got around to giving it new outside paint and a new truck bed. The new Coker white wall radials made it a whole new experience and a better driving rig.

Re: Tell us what your working on !
a 1939 ford standard sedan, body is off the frame and all parts are off the car. I am putting the drive train and independant suspension from a 1979 mercedes 300TD. Why? cause I can. It was rolling chassis when I got it, no engine nothing. So after a lot of deliberation and thought for use I went with the mercedes for fuel economy and engine life as it will be a daily driver. The independant suspension is nice too. And I love diesal . The body will be kept as origional as possible and look forward to getting it running...

SSsssteamer, Love the 46! Makes me wish I didn't get rid of my 45 before I came to Alaska. I had a chance to buy a 42 last year, but I was already knee deep in my current project, a 31 coupe on a 32 frame, with all 36-46 running gear.

Re: Tell us what your working on !
Just finished this week installing a new windshield in my '38 LZ conv coupe. First one
only lasted 73 years! I'ave been hooked on HV12 LZ and Contientals since '65. Picked up a '48 LC coupe in Aug. last year and just about closing up engine. Pulled in- take and pan to get rid of mud and sludge. Pretty clean, engine looks to be rebuilt to '42 specs (2-15/16 bore) I know ...WOW. On a good day these things only put out about 120HP. Some one left (tray) out of pan and the crank wacked the float to pcs. Still have ign. to do , rebuild carb, go over radiator, repair gas tank, and not to mention ,complete brake system! Well, as that other Larry said; GIT ER DONE! ! ! |

Correcting the "professional" brake job done on the '40 brakes of my '36 coupe back in '63.
Notice the lack of surface contact between shoe and drum; one of the major reasons, I suspect, why folks don't believe these "antique" brakes have stopping power. Shoes will need to be re-arced for full contact. |

41 Continental I have had since 74, working on it off and on since, almost there finally!!! Repolishing the heads and intake, then install the engine, and finish wiring the engine and dash. I have done everything at home with the exception of the upholstery and top. It's is as original as I could get it including the color, interior and top.
