zerks (grease nipples)
How are the original ones fitted?
I am guessing they are pressed in. If I cannot screw them out and screw a modern style one in its place, what is the best method of greasing them? Do I have to buy an original style grease gun or is there an attachment to fit a modern grease gun? |

On a related subject: Is there a place to get replacement originals?

Re: zerks (grease nipples)
The best grease gun for the A that I have used is like these, very quick, one handed operation

Re: zerks (grease nipples)
Some are press fit and some are threaded. Being as my A's are not for national judging, I use the modern style fittings. The modern style fittings are more user friendly and that is what matters most for me. Most model A venders offer fittings in both styles and in kit form.

Front shackles for instance look like pressed in.
To change them, do you have to pull? punch ? press ? them out and thread a hole for a modern one? |

Re: zerks (grease nipples)
The press in fittings can be a pain to remove. Sometimes I use a chisel to move one side of the fitting out a bit and then use vise grips. I remove them the best way that I can. The new fittings are driven in. There is a grease fitting driver on page 151 in the newest Brattons catalog, first column, part number 36810 , price $2.75 each. I have used a small deep wall socket for a driver but the correct tool works best. I have purchased drive in fittings from NAPA that appear to have threads but also drive in and work well.

You can find them at any hardware store, such as Ace, which has a selection of fasteners. I just bought some for my pickup. Haven't tried getting any old ones out yet however.....

Re: zerks (grease nipples)
there are 2 types of grease gun adapters for original fittings. The best one is metal. The other is plastic. Restoration supply has metal ones if you cannot find them from an A supplier. They work well on the original fittings. You must feel the tip seat in the small fitting hole before it will accept the grease, then press the tip firmly while pumping the grease. They do not work well on a rubber hose because you need to press the tip into the nipple to seal it. Once its seated, they take the grease easily unless there is a clogged fitting or grease channel. Heat often helps that problem. I much prefer the look of the originals, and with the right fitting and a clean grease channel in the chassis, they are just as easy to lube as a modern fitting.
