Question How do I remove wheel weight adhesive?

I took the weights off my wheels because they weren't doing any good and they were ugly. They were strips of metal adhered to the outside rim. Removing them left some thick adhesive on the wheel. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to remove that adhesive? I've tried mineral spirits and rubber cement thinner to no avail. What now?

Get a quart of DX-330 down at your local PPG paint store - about $15 but is good to clean all sorts of bad off your paint without damaging it.

Carb cleaner will take the paint off too. WD-40, DX-330 is very good, or Goo-Gone.

The problem is they usually leave a film of foam type rubber (probably 3M) which doesn't break down well. The actual adhesive behind it generally breaks down (once you reach it) with gasoline, wax and grease remover, and some other petroleum solvents. Mineral spirits won't do a thing.

Paint thinner or naptha and a plastic spatula so it doesn't scratch the metal.

WD40 will not harm most paints and it will remove adhesives there is a trick to doing it, put it on and let it set for five minutes wipe off then do it again, sometimes it takes four or five times to get it off. if you get in a hurry with some thinners it could harm the paint, WD-40 even will remove old masking tape that has been on cowl bands for 20 years

As per JW I have always had success with WD-40. Another way to apply it is to take a small piece of cloth or paper towel and cover the area with the adhesive you wish to remove. Then saturate the cloth and allow it to sit. Uncover, remove what has dissolved, and then repeat until finished. JS

I use an old credit card to scrape the foam off without hurting the paint. Then the solvent can soften up the adhesive and be easily removed. WD and the like work great.

I'm with the WD-40 crowd. It does a great job. A hair dryer will also soften adhesives.

WD-40 did not work. It removed the foam but not the adhesive. On to 3M adhesive remover.
