Default Do you think this block can be used?

Picked this up today for $150

it appears to have been bored once at Somerville, all pistons are marked with a C:

at first glance things don't look too bad, one cylinder had some water in it at some point....

my fear is that having taking a single bore reading on 1 of the cylinders i come up with 3.219"

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B98...ew?usp=sharing

the heads had 41T marked on them. i was told the engine ran when it came out of a dump truck, has been sitting outside under a roof attached to a barn for sometime now. no signs of cracks as of yet, but i haven't cleaned it up yet, just pulled heads/gaskets, nor have i looked at the bottom end.

assuming no cracks, is there any room left to bore some more if it is needed?

any other thoughts??

Stock 3-3/16" bore is 3.187", so your 3.219 is only .030" over. Lots more room to bore.
But I would recheck with micrometer as a caliper is not going to give an accurate reading, due to cylinder ridge.

If it started out life as a 239 then your measurements make it a worn .030 over with a lot more life to go. The round center water hole makes it look like a '39. It looks like it is factory relieved which blower motor builders kill for. Check out this site...

Good point Lonnie and Ralph. It didn't cross my mind yet that it was a 239 engine. Lonnie, thanks for that link, I hadn't seen that one before. The pics are pretty bad, and the deck isn't that clean, but it isn't relieved.

If one cylinder has bad pits in it put in a sleeve.
That block doesnt seem to bad to me.
Scrape it and check for cracks if it looks good go ahead

First place I'd be looking for cracks is around the pan rail. Minor ones can be fixed, but I have a block here that is scrap because of a massive crack at the pan rail.

If it is usable, that was a good score.

Mart.
