Two Good Car Museums and a Large Bearing
I just returned home yesterday from a week on the road, and a couple days stranded in Benton Harbor due to the crap gas destroying my new fuel pump. I went to the Model A doings at the Gilmore museum, and arrived in Michigan a couple days early so I could also visit the Studebaker museum in South Bend, Indiana. Both are excellent museums and worth the price of admission. I spent 3 hours at the Studebaker museum and took 112 pictures. This isn't a Studebaker site, so I won't post the pictures here, but in the lower level of the Studebaker museum was this large bearing that weighs more than my Studebaker.
It would be easy to spend several hours at the Gilmore museum. The Model A building is the nicest looking building there. It's very nicely done in period design and filled with many beautiful cars and parts. Anyone need a new pilot bearing? |

Re: Two Good Car Museums and a Large Bearing
Wow, impressive, all this time I thought Torrington Bearings only came from Torrington, CT.
In fact a number of yrs ago I had a bearing question that I knew only an old timer could answer and I called Torrington, CT and asked to speak to their oldest engineer. It worked, he knew exactly what I needed to know. As far as crap gas, Tom, you and I are the only ones having trouble with it. Everyone else on here cringes or looks away any time I talk about how much time, trouble, aggravation, and expense it has cost me

After seeing water in my sediment bowl several times in the past few months I've taken up the habit of adding ~1/2 a can of SeaFoam at every fill up to absorb the moisture in the gas. (1oz/gal). |

Re: Two Good Car Museums and a Large Bearing
This forum has heard me 'bitch' several times about the crappy gas that is fouling up my two Ford Model A's.
Several years ago California gas began destroying seals, gaskets, gas tank sealer, etc. And now I find water in all the gas I get from my local (Eureka, CA) gas pumps. "Water, water, everywhere - and not a drop to drink ! " Y-Blockhead : I am not familiar with 'SeaFoam' - can you tell us a little about it ? - Doug Vieyra, Eureka, Calif |

Re: Two Good Car Museums and a Large Bearing
I also do not recall anyone praising modern day fuels, ...but I do recall a few folks discussing Vapor Lock.
Tom, this "...stranded a couple days" has me intrigued. I cannot believe you could not 'MacGuyver' something (make a new diaphragm, retro an electric fuel pump, use a tire pump to pressurize the tank, something???) to get home with. So tell us more about this adventure please!! |

Re: Two Good Car Museums and a Large Bearing
Brent, I installed a new fuel pump a few days before the trip, hoping it would have the new diaphram material that works with crap gas. I was fine until I got to Benton Harbor and had to buy the crap gas because no stations had the good gas. My friend located an electric fuel pump at O'Riley's south of Niles, so we drove down and bought it. Had to hit half a dozen other places before I could find the brass fittings and steel line to plumb the pump. Now that I'm home I will buy some more fittings to make a neater installation.
I need to buy some material from McMaster Carr and hope it works for the crap gas. Then I can rebuild a few pumps I have. |

Re: Two Good Car Museums and a Large Bearing
This is the setup I use on the '29 in my avatar. I have a similar setup on my roadster. Changed out the filters a couple of months ago and was amazed at how much crap they caught.
The American Museum of Speed in Lincoln NB is chock full of A & T stuff, including one of Edsel's cars. http://www.museumofamericanspeed.com/default.dlp

Re: Two Good Car Museums and a Large Bearing
Sorry I missed you at Gilmore,. Tom. I looked all over. But then I would not have recognized you if we stood side-by-each. Just know you thru your posts. Must be lucky here in Maine with our brand of "crap" gas. Every time I fill my A, T or Healey, I put in a neck full of blue STA-BIL (marine grade) and 4 oz of MMO. Say what you will, I've never been left stuck on the road.
