Spare Tire fender Well
Our family has a very nice 31 Slant. It has 16 inch wheels. We are looking for a recommendation of a shop to install tire well in the RF fender. Car is located in Western Kentucky near Paducah. The well would need to be modified so the wider tire fits properly. Do not feel local body shops have the expertise to handle the job correctly.
We have a trailer so transportation is not a problem. Also we would like to have a set of modern shocks installed. Thanks... |

Re: Spare Tire fender Well
Wider wheel wells are very problematic as they consume the width of the fender.
What you have to do is split (or make) a wheel well. It is important to know exactly where the center of the tire will end up so that it will center where the well will go. I guess one could "assume" where it goes by just splitting the distance on the 19" measurement but we know where that gets one. A 16" tire and wheel may not end up equidistant as the 19". I would cut the splash where the arm will come out, install the arm, mount a wheel with no tire and try to determine centering. I do 19" wheel wells all the time but not 16" A buddy of mine did one and, as noted above, it really took the width out of the fender; I do not remember what it did to the bead edge. |

Read up on the modern shocks. Make sure to get the ones with the best reviews. I cheaped out and it rides like a mule wagon.
