how to remove steering wheel on 36
sorry to have to ask this again but need to remove the steering wheel on the 36 and not sure where to start. I have the original style housing near the steering box with a clip. Thanks in advance!

Re: how to remove steering wheel on 36
1st remove the light wiring harness from the base of steering column by loosening the bail wire. Then slip out directly downward. Also remove the spring & light switch spider & its keeper from the horn rod. There is a tool to do this available from Macs.Use tool to push up on the spider and remove the keeper(looks like a washer cut in half) from around the horn rod. Now you can get in the car and pull the horn/switch head & horn rod out. If you have a Conv with top down just pull straight out. Closed car requires you to loosen steering & drop away from dash to get horn rod out without bending(you do not want to bend rod) Then remove steering wheel nut & you may be able to wiggle the wheel loose or use a puller. Good Luck!

The wheel is not drilled for a puller.I use a Harbour Freight bearing seperator under the wheel. I use a two jaw puller to grap the seperator and pull the wheel. Use rags under the whel for cushion. Ford had a special tool that worked the same way.

I see from your second picture that you still have the '35-'36 steering gear box. Since you will be pulling just about everything apart to get the steering wheel off you might want to give some serious thought to switching the steering gear box to a '37-'40 unit. This is a common swap that yields great results. PM me if you want some details and pictures of the swap. Tom |

Re: how to remove steering wheel on 36
you also need the bracket off the frame of a 37 to 40 to do the swap correctly.
as for a steering wheel puller, i got one from an old timer that was made by snap-on that hooks around steering wheel that were not drilled for the common puller used on later production cars. it has a chart inside that box listing all the early auto makes from the 20-40's |

If that steering wheel is really tight on the shaft taper, I would suggest using a good puller that mounts under the hub, with something between the puller and the hub to protect from marring the plastic on the hub. I used pieces of leather.
Here are some pictures of the SW puller that I made.......

Re: how to remove steering wheel on 36
Ted, I must admit, I am a character . When I was gainfully employed by a large manufacturing company, we had a huge prototype model shop that thought nothing of throwing away tons of pieces, parts, equipment and all kinds raw materials imaginable. I never let a day go by without checking the scrap bins. All the parts and pieces for that puller and other tools/equipment that I have made came out of those scrap bins. The guy who had a contract to haul away this stuff was a multi millionaire.
That puller has removed some very tight steering wheels.

Re: how to remove steering wheel on 36
Regarding steering wheel puller... for us non-purists -- On my 34, I simply drilled and tapped two holes in the steering wheel hub, close to the shaft, for 1/4-20. Could have used 5/16-18 or 5/16-24, would have worked just as well.
Then simply used a modern (cheapo) 2-bolt steering wheel puller. The wheel was stuck pretty good, but pulled off ok. I also used a chunk of metal to protect the shaft - I think maybe a nut? JMO (And, I really miss those scrap bins. I also used to have free access to them. At the time, I didn't really have the proper appreciation of their value. Now, I sure wish I had 'stockpiled' a little.) |

Hi Everyone, Post #9 is the one that worked for me! Thanks again JM!
One more vote for being extra careful with the horn rod, you really don't want to tweak it at all! -VT/JeffH |

Re: how to remove steering wheel on 36
Hi again Everyone,
JM, I was reading Post 9 again. What a work of art! I noticed some things I wanted to ask you about. In photos 2 & 4 there is an empty bolt hole. In photo 6, showing the "other half," no hole. Do you remember anything about what the hole is about? When you made it, did you do a drawing or did you just whip it out from your idea in your head? -VT/JeffH Last edited by VeryTangled; 11-16-2013 at 05:11 PM. |
