Building a '36 roadster and driving my '36 pickup. However, I really love '35 grilles because of the Millers at Indy.

I favor 35 for the grille - wire wheels and external horns - they are both great looking cars - can not go wrong with either!

So, let us know what the differences were/are (other than grill) so that we can chose one to buy when the opportunity comes along,eh! That is, more engine, better brakes, more wipers ..what?

Re: Which do you prefer 1935 or 1936??
Well now lets see...all my old Fords are '35's....so what can I say? I wanted a 3w coupe and would have bought either year if the right car/deal came along but since it didn't, I wound up buying a '35 5w coupe. Sooo...long story short...I would have to say i prefer the '35, although that being said, I would definitely not kick any model '36 out of my garage. The truth is,...I like every early Ford V8 that i see and fantasize about owning everyone I see for sale. I know it's an incurable sickness that I have had for the last 55 years. Now I need to get out in the garage and get my 'fix' for the day . The line up.........

Hm, don't know about crying, but quite a story there, IMO. How many (76year old)cars do you know that are bought new and still in the same hands ?

Always thought the 35 had the nicer grill and fender style. Mechanically and interior are about equal.

Re: Which do you prefer 1935 or 1936??
I think that both are spectacular. The 35 grill, the last of the 33-34 type. 36 grill starts to smooth out leading into the later years.
35 is a little sharper and tighter in design. The 36 starts to flow out, all the little stuff gets rounder and longer feeling, which I like. I like all the coupes from 32-40. In particular the 32s,33s,34s,35s,36s,37s,38s,39s,and40s. :]' Last edited by Tinker; 08-04-2012 at 03:09 PM. |

Re: Which do you prefer 1935 or 1936??
Both cars are about equal in terms of mechanics and style, the main difference being the Grille. I always preferred the '36' but four or five years ago I turned, now it's the '35' Grille that appeals to me the most.
In the Pickups I have one of each, again the '35' pips the '36' in the Grille dept. That slightly laid back grille on the '35' is pure class. But not to be outdone, the '36' A pillars with their curve at the bottom where they rise out of the cowl, is a very small but nice detail. |

Re: Which do you prefer 1935 or 1936??
My grandmother had a 36 and my mother and father went on their honeymoon in it in 1954. I can still see it parked up in the farm as a kid in the mid '60's. Dad also had an English V8 Pilot until the mid 60's which was based in appearance on the 36. I love the 36 grill as much as I love the family connection. Going to get one some day for a trip back then ...

Re: Which do you prefer 1935 or 1936??
I have one of each ('35-'36). The '36 has a few mechanical refinements that the '35 doesn't have (larger radiator capacity, electric fuel gauge, heli-cut first gear) but my heart lies with the '35 with its' smooth flowing fenders.

My avatar sums it up for me,but, maybe, just maybe if the '36 Roadster had wire wheels and '35 flowing fenders things could be different.

When I started loving cars I wasnt sure whether I preferred a 34 or a 36;Then I saw my first 35-wow,grille of a 34 with 36 style (and space!). Have a 36 now, and love it.I would love either as a convertible sedan, thats my dream car.I saved every picture in this thread,Thanks guys!

Tough call; like the wire wheels and exterior horns on the '35 but I prefer the '36 front end. (I'd take one of each).

For me the '36, and not just because I have owned one for almost 60 years is without a doubt the best looking car that Ford ever made. The '35 does have a little bit more of a classic look with the wire wheels, external horns and flatter grille, however, the whole body, the shape of the rear fenders, grille, etc., on a '36 just flows together... The mechanical improvements of the '36 is something that is hard to put in prospective because they are unseen.. The final difference is spelled out in the sales figures of the two vehicles.. The '36 Ford outsold the '35 by several thousand units, and in fact out sold Chevy for the first time since the Model A... The public voted with their check books, not their hearts.

Re: Which do you prefer 1935 or 1936??
I like the '35 for the more mechanical look and the wire wheels, but overall the art deco look of the '36 does it for me.
I love the '36 grille, longer hood and longer taillight stalks. Also I love the way the cowl wraps around in the front on the Phaeton and Roadster. Last edited by Henryat1140; 08-05-2012 at 02:14 PM. |

While we are all wishing, if I had my choice of all Fords ever made it would be a 1939 Deluxe Coupe. In my honest opinion it was the best looking Ford ever made, bar none.

Re: Which do you prefer 1935 or 1936??
My pile of parts included a '35 body and my choice of fenders. Even though I like the smooth transition into the wheel wells of the '35, I prefer the style of the '36's and that's what I picked.
So I it's '36 for me, but I wouldn't kick any model '35 outta my garage for leaking oil. They're all beautiful in their own right. Last edited by Rusk; 08-06-2012 at 03:50 PM. |

Re: Which do you prefer 1935 or 1936??
Do your research. From "The Production Figure Book for U.S. Cars" by Jerry Heasley: 1935 Ford Calendar year production.... 942,439. 1936 Ford Calendar year production.... 791,812. 1935 Ford new passenger car Registrations: ....826,519. 1936 Ford new passenger car registrations....748,554. 1935 Chevrolet calendar year production.....793,437. 1936 Chevrolet Calendar year production....975,238. 1935 Chevrolet new Passenger Car Registrations....656,698. 1936 Chevrolet new Passenger Car registrations....930,250. Ford plainly out produced the competition in 1935 and didn't do it again until 1957. 1936 was a poor year for Ford sales compaired to the 1936 Chevrolet sales. 1935 Fords rule over the 1936 Fords. Always have. I own both years. I also have the book "The serial number book for U.S. Cars 1900-1975" by Grace Brigham. Both books are very good reading for production figures for body types too..

SSsssteamer-
Hummm... Not that it really matters that much but, production numbers for '35 and '36 differ slightly from your figures. Data taken from "The Early Ford V8" by George DeAngelis shows 1935 calendar year production as 1,151,554 units whereas 1936 calendar production was 706,185 units. Regardless, of the source, data suggests that '35 production was substantially more than '36. Tom |

Re: Which do you prefer 1935 or 1936??
According to Ford movies made at the time, the company was tired of being outsold by Chevrolet and vowed to sell a million cars in 1935. There was a big sales push and a lot of promotion.
For example, the Indy pace car in 1935 was the newly-introduced Convertible Sedan. Ford also entered the race with front wheel drive cars but did not do well; supposedly because the exhaust was too close to the steering box and cooked the lubricant out of it. And they did sell over a million cars in '35 After 1935, they just slipped back into the old methods for selling and sales figures dropped. I've often wondered how much influence Bob Gregorie had on the styling updates from '36 to '36. |

The 35 is nice, but the 36 has one of the prettiest front end of the 1930s

The 35 has it's classic look, maybe why I've had nine for 43 years.

35, but I am biased, mainly for the grille but the wings flow much nicer than the 36.

Re: Which do you prefer 1935 or 1936??
I have a `35 but I like the `36 best. I had an opportunity a few years back to trade my `35 ragtop for a freshly restored `36 5 window coupe. I didn't do it. I should have looked at it...

Re: Which do you prefer 1935 or 1936??
Well, I have to put my 2 cents in as well. I guess it's like anything else, if you wind up with a 72 Ford Pinto, you naturally see every Pinto on the road ( all three of them), and find yourself partial to them. So now that I have become the current care taker of two 35's, I tend to appreciate them a little more than the other early V8's. I too, look at all of them, and wish I could own them all. 35s just seem so bold and fresh of a design from the 34s that they sort of stand alone. 36s are perhaps the more elegantly designed car between the two years, but it just comes down to personal preference, and of course, which year you happen to own.

I prefer 36 passenger car but 35 pickup truck. But, most beautiful car ever built is the 34 Roadster, bar none.

Between the 35 and the 36 pickup, I prefer the 35. I like the grill better and I like the hood sides better. If you are not running purely stock and using a chrome windshield, chrome horns, a banjo, and maybe even a smiley bumber, the 35 is a very nice looking pickup.

Both the 35 and 36. As a side comment, Dad a Ford dealer in the 30s said he and other dealer friends said when the 37s were introduced, " How on earth are we going to sell those ugly ducklings after the 33 thru 36 beauties"?

I like them both, but like the wire wheels better. As far as cabriolets, I see a lot more 36's than 35's around here.

When I started looing for 30's Fords I skipped right over the 36's. I was never a fan of the grille. My favorites are 34, 35, 37,39/40 in that order

Re: Which do you prefer 1935 or 1936??
One more comment....the cars ( any make ) come out with a new model....like the '35 Ford. Then, the following year, they use the same car and make changes for the sake of the 'New' year......but......in my opinion, it's just a make-up job from the original design. For me, this has never worked on any of the cars made over the past so many years...and the introduction year of a new design is always the best. It's as if the originator/designer was told to 'take a hike', and we'll take over from here.....cheaper than complete new tooling.
