Default 15 inch Wheel ID

I have a set of 15 inch wheels 5 on 5 1/2. Inside hubcap bumps just over 8 inches. Could they be of a later F1

When you say 8" is that outer edge to edge or the measurement where the tire actually mounts?

Ford is not the only manufacturer that used 5 x 5-1/2" wheels.

Correct, but Ford alone used the 8.092” hub cap mounting diameter. The most likely wheel here is the 15” x 5.00” one piece wheel first used on pickups in 1955 (B5C 1015-A). There were early 1940s special equipment 15” wheels, and a 6.00” wide special equipment wheel in the 1950s. The width of the wheels would be helpful to know. Stu

Wheel has four inside bumps where hubcap mounts that measure inside to inside just under 8 1/8. Six inch rim. Not a lot of hub cap options that I have found

How are you measuring width? Across the lips or down inside between bead lips? If it’s six across the lips it’s probably five between. Stu

I have 5 or 6 15" wheels that I'll give to anyone that wants them. some are in good shape and some not, but you have to take team all. I've been converting my 5 on 5 1/2 axles to 5 on 4 1/2. X 16. The 15: tire size is a thing of the past and will become more expensive and the choice of sizes will be less. The 16 is the size of the future, at least it's what i was told by a dealer. I thought 17 would be in but 18 has a better chance. At present the 16 are plentiful in the 4 1/2 size I picked up a nice set of good looking wheels for 15 bucks apiece.. I realize this doesn't meet the demand of the stock restored car, but the aftermarket like cooker will have what you need. For average guy that just wants a driver this is the way to go. My 47 Int with 280 Flathead wil live for ever. My great gran-kids will learn to drive in Gramps old truck and she'll climb any hill in Vermont in OD.

Why did you not go to 5 on 5 1/2 by 16. Loads of those around. Also seems that brand new wheels cheaper than converting

What future? At our age the future is now. There are plenty of 15" tires still available. Who cares about 20+ years from now.

I tracked that 15” x 6” size through time and don’t find another until the mid 1970s. Whether they’d still have the “innie” nubs I doubt. Stu

Found them with a bunch of stuff in a boneyard at the back of a friends ranch here locally. There were remnants of three or four F1's near by. So I assumed later F1. There were plenty of 16 inchers and later 15 inch truck with bumps out

The picture makes it look new or restored. Is that how you found it or did you paint it? And are there others the same width? What’s your plan for it? Stu

At 85 and 5/6 I'll never have to worry about wheels and tires. But my children and gran kids will have something that will ever have to worry about getting tires for it. Unfortunately, My grand daughter was the one that wanted the stick shift, and she's in Baltimore. I put new tires on it 6 years ago and only 500 miles on them, but I'll have to replace them in 4 years. with the 10 year rule

When I was a contractor I bought an older fifth wheel trailer for me and crew to sleep in for a remote job. Tread was perfect but tires were rotten. Changed all four before we had problems. Very old tires with perfect tread can be dangerous

My question for Ron is why not just change rims. New ones with offset and rim width you want would be cheaper than changing to 5 on 4 1/2. Pretty sure

The tire shops recommend replacement after 5-years but they do want to sell tires. They will last longer than that but 10-years is starting to get on a fine line between safe and dangerous. We never even thought about it when we were kids but the wisdom of old age puts things in a different perspective.

The 16s and over might be the majority of tires in the future (whenever that is) but they will be for those modern large wheels wheels with the ultra low aspect ratio. Won't do you any good on an old Ford anyway.

Stu....I'm fairly certain that '66 was the last year for the "innie" nubs. DD

Most young kids today couldn't care less about our old cars. They want to drive new Toyotas!

Yup DD, I have got 15 x 5.5" wide and 15x6" wide steel wheels off
both '65 and '66 Ford 1/2 tons, and all had the "innie" hubcap nubs.

BUT, I did get a set of 15x6" wide steel wheels off a late build '66 Ford
1/2 ton, that did have the "outie" hubcap mounting tabs, so I'm thinking
'66 was a transition year for "innie" and ''outie" Ford 1/2 ton wheels...

Edit to clarify, that these pickups with the 15x6" were in an old junk yard
in the late 80's and they were telephone pickups, the kind with utility boxs
on them.

FYI: I like to put a dab of silicon sealant on the wheel nubs before I install the cap. I haven't lost a cap since I started doing this.
