Default Power to coil

On a couple of occasions when testing things the ignition has been left in the ON position for an extended period of time causing the coil to boil.

Running a Mallory 58K V coil with internal resistor along with a Mallory dual point distributor.

Thinking we could add an external resistor but that would only drop the voltage and slow the problem. Adding a toggle from the ignition is the easy fix but could still be forgotten.

Haven't found anything in a search, has anyone come across this and how did you resolve it?

Thanks

Flapjack has the obvious answer, but what is not so obvious is what your problem is?

What is the resistance of the coil?? Mallory makes a 29219 58 K coil for electronic ignition thats 1.4 ohms and a 29216 thats .7 ohms...
Both are spec-ed out for electronic ignitions not points.....
I would check the coil if its getting really hot...

You have a 50/50 chance of not burning up the coil. If the points are open no problem, closed with a good battery the coil has a melt down. Install a battery disconnect. G.M.

Happened with 29217 and with 29219 and according to the folks at Mallory these will both work for dual points.

Are we using the wrong coil?

We all have that sort of defect! A failsafe solution would be to rig up a footpedal that powers up only when stepped on.

It's not failsafe but you could hook up an indicator light so at least it would be obvious the switch was still on.

Sometimes I open the garage and find I'd left all the overhead "indicator" lights on the day before!

How about a real annoying buzzer. I have done the same thing with ignition switch many times. I do it all the time with the valves my oxy-atcetylene setup as well. Slow leak, but very expensive. 15 minutes ago I installed a push-pull marine ignition switch in my panel truck instead of the toggle switch I was using. Hoping that might make a difference.

How do you wire the buzzer so it is not on when the motor is running?

I'm sorry, but if you are troubleshooting other stuff that needs the ignition switch in the "on" position, just disconnect the coil.

How hard can it be?

Boiled the coil on a Buick once. It was never the same again. Had to replace it.

Mart.

You'll probably have to get a real low pressure rated oil pressure switch. Else the damn thing will come on at idle when hot. Not uncommon for a flathead oil pressure to drop to almost nothing at idle when hot.
