Default F 1 brakes on 40 spindals

Have some f1 brakes. I have read the 53-56 brakes work. I have a 40 axle going on model A. Flat head powered. Any info would be Great! Was wondering if the 40 spindle will work?
Thanks George

Not sure about the question, are you wanting to use F1 hubs and backing plates on 1940 spindles? The answer would be yes (with a little effort). Or are you asking about the rear axle, or both? What is the 53-56 reference?

53-56 are F100 & 49-52 are F1. Either will work, but you have to use the hub and drum as a set.

I have an article (9 pages) about this swap that I can send you. Since it is so big, snail mail is best. Email or pm me your address and I will send a copy to you.

Yes the F-100 brakes will work on the 40 spindle. It requires and inner bearing and seal change. I have done this 3 different times. You use the 40 outer bearing and there is no need to change the outer or inner races. Use Koyo roller bearing #14116 for the inner bearing and National seal # 473440. The seal may be hard to find, but they do show up on e-Bay. You can also use Chicago Rawhide seal #15214. This change also moves your wheels inboard about 1/4".

Its easier with 42-48 square back spindles. Hose interference with the kingpin on 37-41 rpund spindles. If your replacing all the bearings and races with new speedway sold a kit with all of it and the seals

'40 spindles will work with F1 or '53-'56 brakes with a bearing & seal change.
Speedway sells a bearing & seal kit for this application. I've used it, it works.
The '37-'41 round back spindles require a little grinding on the top to clear the hose.
Not a big deal.
'42-'48 square back spindles require no grinding.
