Fuel pump valve removal
Have two spare fuel pumps for my engine thought I'd rebuild one. Pretty straight forward it seems but now I'm a bit frustrated. The intake and discharge valves seem to be stuck in the housing and I see no mechanical clip etc. holding them in place. No apparant corrosion and soaked in deep creep penetrating oil to facilitate removal to no avail. Can't be this difficult but feeling really dumb founded. Suggestions?

Re: Fuel pump valve removal
This style was not meant to be rebuilt.

Re: Fuel pump valve removal
They are a press fit. Removing them with a screwdriver as a lever will usually ruin them, but if you have replacements you'll be ok.

Re: Fuel pump valve removal
The rebuild kits come with the two new check valves. After you pry the old ones out, press the new ones in with a socket and light tapping. (Don't do like I did and put both in the same way.....not paying attention) Napco makes a very nice rebuild kit and it comes with a new diaphragm, lever, and the check valves, etc.)

Re: Fuel pump valve removal
I've always shied away from the hammer, vise grip and pry methods til the last resort because I've screwed up many a part doing so. Seems I'm at that point in this endeaver but then again nothing ventured nothing destroyed...LOL The pump is a spare so no biggie
Thanks for the input from everyone |

Re: Fuel pump valve removal
I've rebuilt these before. I put a screw in them and yank with a slide hammer. After you have those out, make sure you reinstall the replacements the same direction, then you will have to stake around the edges with a punch or screwdriver to peen the white metal over to hold them in place.

Re: Fuel pump valve removal
Kurt has a good point about the check valves. They usually are not a problem and last long time unless they have heavy corrosion or white gunk from the gas siting in the pump. If they look good, leave em be.

Re: Fuel pump valve removal
I always remove them and replace with modern Viton valves, As I media blast the housings to make them look good.
Getting them out I use a tiny little homemade pry bar. I peen the edges with a small chisel so the new ones will press in, and then use loc-tite wicking compound on a screwdriver edge around the outer edges to seal them in place. Did 4 today this way. I have a tool I made on my lathe to install them without damage. |
