1940 Pickup tail lights
I will be putting my pickup back together soon. Since I'm using a new frame and new box, I need to figure out where to mount the tail lights. Does anyone have a picture they could send?
Also need to figure out what to do about front turn signals. At this point, I don't plan on running a front bumper. Thanks |

Re: 1940 Pickup tail lights
Can't help with tail lights but why not use the parking lights for front turn signal?

Re: 1940 Pickup tail lights
For your turn signals in front, use the parking lights. Bob Drake makes a conversion kit, C7G has the frog eyes glass for the headlight rim.
For taillight, my bracket bolts to the backside of bolts for tailgate hinge. Drake and Sacramento Vintage Ford have the brackets. |

Re: 1940 Pickup tail lights
Get on the early V8 web site and order "Two great trucks" by Howard Towne. Pg 26 has a good detail of what you may be looking for.

Re: 1940 Pickup tail lights
For tail lights you need to know if you will be running a rear bumper. If no bumper then the tail light mounting is easy and pretty obvious. If you use a rear bumper, tail light mounting is way different. You should get the Howard Towne book. You are lucky in that it has just been reprinted and readily available for cheap.
Just my opinion |

Re: 1940 Pickup tail lights
This is the rear of mine. the stock tail light brackets are flipped side to side to raise the plate above the bumper.
The directional switch I used utilizes the parking lights for front directionals. The circuit for those was the same as used for the rear brake lights. I never found an ID on this 9 wire switch.

Thanks 41Ford1. Very nice truck.
I just ordered the Howard Towne book. $10 plus $22.50 to ship. Crazy shipping prices for a small book to Canada. |

I just looked it up and the shipping was $3.99, what is the deal with shipping to Canada?

I went with later model taillights and bumper.

Re: 1940 Pickup tail lights
I installed the tail lights with the bolts that hold the lower hinge on the tailgate. It worked like a charm.
In the picture you can see a brand new reproduction tailgate. Of course it needed a little massaging to fit. |

Re: 1940 Pickup tail lights
Couper, if your going to have a bumper, you can flip the the brackets over and lift the tail lights up a little higher. Also makes the license plate more visible. Looking good.

Re: 1940 Pickup tail lights
In addition you can use the later brackets (53-56) which also move the tailamps out a bit from the bed and allow more room for the license plate.

Re: 1940 Pickup tail lights
Thanks for the advice. I have a rear bumper but now I need to get the brackets that hold it to the frame. These trucks never look finished without the bumper.

Re: 1940 Pickup tail lights
I thought you might be interested in a picture of the truck. this is just before I gave it a full coat of high built primer. Since this, I have taken the cab off the frame again. I was painting the primer in my pop-up portable garage. In a recent wind storm, the wind pulled it from the anchors and flipped it over breaking the windshield in my daughters car.
