Default Temp guage in 40 ford coupe

A friend has a 40 coupe with two after market temp gauges underneath his dash. He has each one hooked up to cylinder head. The original dash gauge only was set up to one head, correct ??????

Why does the car have two after market gauges ?

Yes, the left head originally.

It's better is why. A flathead is sort of two semi-separate cooling systems, a left and right of block. They don't mix till they hit the radiator. My 38 runs 5 degrees warmer on the US passenger side.

I always wondered why there was not an aftermarket gauge that could show left and right banks. Kinda like the English units that show oil pressure and water temp in one small unit

When you think about it, there would really be a pretty limited market for such an item (a relative few ol' geezers with flathead Ford engines), whereas the water temp/oil pressure gauge would work for gazillions of applications. DD

I have seen dual analog temp gauges in the past. I just spent a few minutes looking, and can't find any. It seems that there are all kinds of dual digital electrical gauges. Maybe that's why there are no analog ones around anymore. They do make dual analog heat gauges for snowmobiles, but they measure cylinder head temperature and have a range of 0-600 degrees. One of those would probably work, but that's probably not what you want. I believe that some snowmobiles used dual water temperature gauges as well. A source for these would be a 70's vintage snowmobile (I think Arctic Cat used them). Probably not much help to a guy from Australia.

Smiths did make a dual mechanical temp gauge which looks similar to their dual temp and oil pressure gauge as fitted to MGs etc. I don't know the origin of the dual temp gauge but it might have been a commercial vehicle unit. I have one of these which I had two new capillary lines and bulbs fitted at great expense. Its the only one I have ever seen so its rare for sure. Regards, Kevin.
