Default RIP Doug Black

Ford Barn member "d.", aka Doug Black of Louisburg NC, passed away early this morning. I was informed by his wife of 33 years. Doug had been in the hobby since at least high school, although I would consider him more a collector than a restorer. He owned several As that were basically time capsules of how they appeared in the 50s and 60s. He had a huge parts collection focusing on 1928 cars.

No idea what will happen to his collection. I assume his widow will have to arrange an auction due to the massive size. Probably months or even years away from that.

Doug was an amazing guy. Very nice, always willing to help. His collection has at least 5 early roadsters, all complete and all original. They probably could be made to run with a couple of days worth of work but they will need complete restoration to bring them to pristine condition. Many many parts. Lots of engines. As said, he focused on the early cars. I don't remember seeing one 30-31. When the time comes for the cars and parts to be sold, I hope everyone will make an effort to attend to support his widow. I was there about a month ago and he was working on a roadster pickup and cussing at the person who put a tail light in the fender instead of the original bracket mounted one. Doug was a very private person and was not comfortable with an internet presence. He liked to deal one-on-one with club members. I will miss him.

I tried to count the number of horns he'd collected, I stopped around 110. He had at least three 28/29 gas tanks. Powerhouse generators, original coils, doors, hoods, headlamp buckets, you name it. I did go through his exhaust manifolds one time and every single one was bad.

Sad News to hear...Doug and I got acquainted during a drive down to South Carolina last year when we traveled to a Model A show in Columbia. Doug was not big on crowds and rarely participated on internet related matters, but I counted him as a good friend although we did not talk often. Doug's accumulation of 28 cars and parts was noteworthy...Doug rarely would dispose of anything Model A related, and disliked any alterations to originality on cars...I remember a favorite story where he talked about a fender dent that he refused to fix as it was part of "the history of the car".

Doug was not well known to many in our club, but for those who knew him his friendly disposition and conversation will be missed...

'Also very sad to read this. I have had excellent contact with Doug over the years. The hobby lost a good one today.
