Default 325 gears

Looking for anyone who has installed this ratio in an early rear end. Done many 354’s but not this ratio. Im no noobie when it comes to rebuilding these but this has me about ready to throw in the towel. The carrier preload is set fine but i have all the gaskets on one side and 050 shim under pinion cant get less than 018 backlash I started at 030+. Appreciate any advise tnx

If your carrier preload/backlash is correct and you still have that issue, then to me there is an issue with the gears themselves. There might be a way to "screw with it", but you should not have too in my book. When I put the 354's in my late 32 rear, I had to put all the gaskets on one side as well - but the preload/backlash came in just fine.

Is it possible that the back of the ring gear is hitting the housing? I had to bevel the edge of the ring gear to get it to NOT hit the housing (back side). I doubt this is your issue - as you wouldn't be able to rotate the carrier if it was.

I'd talk to whomever supplied the gears . . .

If you have. .050 shim under the pinion would that not push the pinion further away from the ring gear ? I’ve installed a set of 3:25 gears many years ago but can’t remember any particulars and have done some 3:54s and many Columbias.

Shim between pinion and bearing moves it closer to axle centerline and reduces backlash

You’re correct. I was thinking in terms of a shim underneath the double cup race when you said shim under the pinion. I understand now. Can you not add more shims to close up the backlash ?
