Default Another possibly stupid question...

so I'll blame it on the dog. Buster wants to know if the axle sticking out of the housing as shown here, should wiggle a bit. Is it just the bearings in the hub that hold it in place?

Yes, only the bearings in the hub locate the axles outer end.

Looks like the dawg is taking a close look at things. Ask him!

He's too preoccupied with food or finding a pair of my safety glasses to chew up to think about something like this.

Most that don't have a few years model A experience will notice the loose .ness and figure that it is caused by internal wear . the weight of the rear end of the car is carried by the hub bearing and the rear axle housing bearing race . In time the rear axle housing bearing race race will wear on the bottom and can cause problems with rear brake adjustment . If the rear brakes are adjusted with the rear axle on stands , sometimes the brakes can be too tight and drag when the car is taken off the stands . This drag is usually caused by wear in the outer hub bearing and mostly rear axle housing bearing races . This wear causes the brake shoes to get out of center and drag ..

The only dumb question is the one that does not get asked.

The Snyder's catalog has a nice exploded view of all the brake and hub parts, but not one of the rear axle, so I had no idea if there was also a bearing in the housing.

I thought the same thing with my first model A . I figured at the time that I was going to try and get by with it as long as I could .
