Default Rebuilding stromberg 97

Trying to rebuild my first 97

Looks like the "ball" on the end of the choke lever assembly has been broken off.

Where can I get a new choke lever assembly?
and what is the process for removing the lower shaft to replace the assembly?

Find a person in your area who is a good Tig Welder. have them either build up with weld or weld on a Ball bearing or something. Blend the weld with a small grinder or Dremel.
This repair can be done with the main body of carb removed from the base.

If youve never done one before its difficult,if you have its fairly easy. You need to have the rite tools with you. First remove whole carb from manifold. separate the base from the rest of carb.First the lft side throttle linkage must be removed,do not bend shaft by driving out the small taper pin.Need small drift punch. Then remove the 4 throttle plates screws, remove butterflys [they are 1/2 mooned stamped on one side so make sure they go back in the same way] Then you can slide shaft out of the base. Now you have the bare base with the 2 pc assembly that you have to change, unfortunally its sits behind the bushing it rides on . The bush.+the lever assembly comes out as a unit by tapping behind the lever with an all steel screw driver and small hammer, keep at it it will all come out, Replace with new linkage and reverse everything you did. Not an easy job for a novis on the road. ken ct hope this helps. ken ct.

I would get the acetylene torch out and gas weld a blob on there. You can finish with a file. Obviously, avoid any flammable issues. A pretty simple job.

What he said.
10 minute job and no disassembly.

From the photo...looks like the ball was drilled, likely by someone trying to hook up a wire cable choke!

I use a Drimmel tool with a small burr to remove the staking of the throttle plate screws. They can twist off if forced.

The easy way to remove the linkage bushing, after removing the throttleshaft, is to tap it a couple of turns with a 5/16-24 tap. Insert a 5/16-24 bolt with a nut and stack some suitable washers on it and use it as a puller for the bushing. You can do it quicker than it took me to type this.
Then, if the bushing isn't too worn, it can be re-used and the new threads make a good place to trap a little high-temperature grease.
Factory clearance is .003" (.278"), wear limit is .006".

Thanks for the good info.

Another question I have is what to do about this "plug"

It is on the left side in the pic.

And it sticks out pretty far inside the carb itself. Should I leave it the way it is or find the correct plug to fit the hole?

Send it to Uncle Max or Ken Ct. for a complete rebuild, unless you are a highly skilled welder. Well worth the costs.

The correct plug probably won't fit now, you might consider a hex plug shortened so it doesn't protrude inside the bore.

Someone punched out one of the original drilling access places and probably once had a nipple to supply ported vac to something in there...

Figured I would bring back an old post to ask another question on rebuild the stromberg.

I am trying to remove the throttle shaft, any advice? I see a small pin on one end but haven't had any luck removing it.

Also what the best way to clean up the base for painting, I was thinking glass beading after I remove the throttle shaft?
Is there Any special paint that I should use?

I can usually see which end of the pin is smallest in diameter. Find a small punch about that diameter or slightly smaller. Make sure the other side is well supported before attempting to drive the pin out.
