Try a ford tractor parts outlet My re builder found them to be a lot cheaper than the Ford car parts dealer & they are the same ~~Walts37~~

Thats correct check out a Ford Tractor supply store. I bought some for my 39 Merc. last year for 28.00 per sleeve. I honed the block until the sleeve went in about 1/2 inch I stuck it in the freezer over night they fell into place. If I recall my bore was
3 3/16 Need to ask them what sizes they have for tractors, and make sure length is correct. Alan |

I don't think you guys are reading the post right. He said 3-5/16, that's .125 over standard 3-3/16. I don't believe you honeing that much by hand. Walt

Re: flathead 3-5/16 sleaves who has them for a good deal
Try Falcon global, I bought some about a year ago for around 22 to 24 dollars each,
of course the price probably went up as every thing else has, I may buy a few for a future project, If I remember to get in touch with them Monday Ill' see what I can find and let you know, their number is 800-756-1114. I buy quite a few parts from them, some times I can beat their prices but they most likely will have what you are looking for .I understand they buy some older ford parts from Kanters, It might be a good idea to try Kanters also. Good luck! Fordestes [email protected] 405-623-8419 |

Re: flathead 3-5/16 sleaves who has them for a good deal
i have jahns pistons and there 3-5/16 i bored my block and it has thin spots so the engine shop said to get the sleaves. he said it would be 1000 bucks to do it so i thought i would try to find the sleaves to save some money.

Re: flathead 3-5/16 sleaves who has them for a good deal
You would have to sleeve to 3.3125" finished bore.
This sleeve would have a 3/32" thickness which is a od. of 3.4995". Therefor the hole for sleeve would end up at 3.4995" less your press fit of .002" 3.4975" .I don't think you can go that far but one of the guru's who have built many combination's will chime in here and have some imput.Melling make the sleeve in 7 9/16" length and 9 1/4" length.in 3/32" wall #csl107 or csl408. Hope this info helps Ronnie |

Re: flathead 3-5/16 sleaves who has them for a good deal
How do you know the wall is thin? Why did you bore it to 3 5/16 if the walls were thin?
Yes, you can sleeve it down to 3 5/16 but if you are already too thin, and, as Ronnie said the bore will need to go another .185 larger, there will be little or no support around the sleeves. I wouldn't like for my street engine to begin life with such a precarious situation. |

Does your block have a lot of corrosion in the water jacket, or why is it considered too thin by the machinist? 3 3/8" bores are fairly common and some race engines have bored to 3 7/16". You should be able to find a better block for a lot less than $1,000!

Re: flathead 3-5/16 sleaves who has them for a good deal
I've read accounts of folks boring out the old 221 blocks plumb through the water jackets so they could install 3 3/16" finish bore pistons in there. It would probably end up being the same type of mod. They had to use JB Weld at the tops & bottoms of the sleaves to restore some deck solidity or at least stabilize the deck as much as possible. One of these was a 1935 coupe with a 37 engine and they also modified for an 8CM mercury crankshaft to get it to an honest 255 CID. They ran the Great American Race with it a few times with no major troubles.
It seems like many machine shops get about 100 bucks per hole for sleaves. I guess everything is going up these days. Kerby Last edited by rotorwrench; 02-19-2011 at 12:38 PM. |

Try H&H flatheads. I did a 3 5/16 x 4 59L last year and had to do all eight holes. They had the right sleeves on the shelf. About 28-30 dollars if my ancient memory serves me right.

i started with a standard bore block it was nice they did the first bore and everything looked good then started the bore for 3-5/16 and said they saw some rust spots comming through totally ruined my day. its the 2 block i have taken there the first one was a factory relived block i had cleaned and sonic tested and it had cracks along the pan rail and the side. big wast of 350 bucks. now this i dont win. |

Re: flathead 3-5/16 sleaves who has them for a good deal
If the machine shop or a local NDT lab has an ultrasonic inspection set up. An experienced operator can tell you how thick a surface is anywhere in the cylinders. It can also tell where porosity and inclusions are. This can locate core shift and other irregularities.
If you go the big sleave route you should be OK. The other route for a big bore engine would be to get a 99A or a 29A block with a guarantee of no cracks or internal damages. You will pay more for one of these old rare blocks but you can bore them to 3 3/8" with no problem unless there was a core shift. They have really thick cylinder walls. They were available in 39 to 42 Mercury cars and big Ford trucks. Kerby |
