Default 36 grille

I'm wondering about the side plates on a chrome 36 grill. Are they supposed to be painted over the chrome? If so what kind of primer would stick?

My grill isn't good enough to chrome so I painted it.

Painted.Scuff it real good and then use an epoxy primer before painting.I just redid my 36 grille last week.
