Default Sort of hate to say it but glad this noise isn't from my engine.

Ok I'm going to try to describe a noise we were hearing in a fellow club members engine this morning.

If you were to place a 1/4" nut on edge on a table and place a flat piece of metal such as a large file on top of it so it would balance and then with both hands flat on top of each end of the file push down rather forcefully and move the file to the side so the nut would tip over and slap down flat on the table.

This is what we are hearing and feeling coming from the rear main. The noise is intermittant but happening quite often. Frequency of the noise does change with varying engine speeds.

I'm thinking bad things are going on down there.

That description made me cringe. It can't be good.

any time you got "fork in the garbage disposal" noise coming from any engine especially the mains it cant be good... especially when it increases with rpm... Is it more of a clacking or a thudding noise?

does it appear to have any certian rpm it quiets down?

throwing out ideas besides mains being shot:
could the splash pan be loose?
something loose/fall off the oil pump?

Pull the pan and the head and see what you've got.

I didn't go out for a drive with him we just had it running in the garage. The noise increases and decreases with speed of the engine but has no real set pattern to it. Placing a long screw driver against the engine at the rear main I can feel it vibrate the screw driver when it makes the noise. I think pulling the pan is the first step but unfortunately I don't think it's going to be good. I had hoped that it was something loose in the flywheel housing but now I doubt it.

I agree with that kind of noise, IF you are sure it isn't loose parts in the flywheel cover.

My neighbor started his 1953 Army Jeep the other day and it had a bad noise that would come and go. I told him I was sure it was something in the flywheel cover. I must be a good faith healer because I layed my hand on the flywheel cover to see if I could feel the noise, and it quit and hasn't come back.

Anyway, make sure the noise is in the oil pan and not the flywheel cover, and don't pull the head yet, but don't run the engine if the noise is in the pan. Hate to see the oil pump get thrown around or some such. I bought an engine one time where the oil pump got thrown around, and it wasn't a pretty sight.

Years ago I had an intermittent noise coming from FW hsg & it was a broken bendix bolt getting caught up in the FW & hitting the ridges inside hsg.Sometimes they can jam so bad that it cracks the hsg.

also check the ring gear on flywheel. I had one that got crooked and it began making noise when I would start it, I would pull starter and never saw the movement. One day it got bad enough I checked throw out bearing and later my engine locked up. Took engine out and when I pulled clutch there she was ring gear out of line. Really made noise rubbing on metal of flywheel housing. have fun modelAtony Lafayette,LA
