No key for locking gas cap...help!
On my 1951 Ford F1 pickup truck there is a locking gas cap that didn’t come with a key. Actually, the truck didn’t come with a key either. After the locksmith was working on making a key for the ignition, he worked on the gas cap lock.
No luck Anyone have any ideas? Drilling it out is a last resort as the locking cap is really cool! How do impost a picture without having a url? Thanks Last edited by Sedona48F1; 01-14-2020 at 11:54 PM. |

If you have a photo file on your computer you do not need a url. There are several threads on posting photos.

Re: No key for locking gas cap...help!
Maybe try another locksmith? I had a door key made for a 50 F1. It took him about 30 minutes to make one. Should be the same process. Find the one in town that has been around the longest.
Those locking caps are tough to find. JB |

You can get a new one for $20. Not sure if it is just like original.

One of my tool box lock keys fit my locking gas cap . It does require a little wiggling.

Re: No key for locking gas cap...help!
I had a couple of nice vintage caps that had no keys. After researching their value, I decided it might be worth getting keys made. A local locksmith made them, but they weren't cheap. One of the caps is pictured here.

Re: No key for locking gas cap...help!
Might check around for a spare key hidden somewhere. When I got my truck it had a nice Wise Lock cap on it and no keys. After drilling the cap to get it off I later found a spare key taped to the choke cable under the dash. Good luck!

Can you remove the filler tube and snake the whole thing out? Might be easier then to at least to take it somewhere?

Sedona48F1: just a shot in the dark (but it worked for me - similar situation): grasp the edges of the cap and pull upward hard while twisting counterclockwise. My local mechanic called it his "gas stealing secret." My cap came right off.....no damage.

Re: No key for locking gas cap...help!
How times have changed. An old time locksmith would have a ring of “try out keys”. We had a 50 ish key set that fit 99% of all caps. If not we would pick the lock to remove it and hand impress a key on the bench. Never turned one away. This type of job was the meat and potatoes of business.

I’m sorry that I didn’t include all that info up front in the first post and give the complete story. So it’s not like this thing was running the day before and they just lost the keys the day before I bought it. Which may have been worse. lol |
