Default 1956 fuel gage

Dose a 1956 ford car fuel gage need 12 volts to work

Yes - all 56 gauges operated on a full 12 volts, unlike the 57 and later gauges.

1956 was the only year that the King/Sealey guages were designed to receive the full 12-volt input. 1957 and later guages had a regulator ahead of the guage input.
