titling and registering 32 Roadster street rod

And we thought the mechanical part of getting this rod back on the road was difficult.

Our situation is the car was last registered by our father in 1954 when there was no such thing as a title. We do have the registration. Our father sold the car to my brother and I around 1980, but there was no actual paper work as there was no title. The car is currently in NY at my brother's home. I live in PA.

PA seems to very street rod friendly. NY I sense is a different case. My question to so those who have registered street rods in either state, what is the process. Note my father is still alive, but at 93 that can unfortunately change anytime.

I don't know the rules either in PA or NY, but it seems to me you should try to get a title in PA before you try anywhere. It doesn't matter that the car is now in NY. If your Dad is able and since he is the owner per the registration he should initiate getting a title.


Best to contact the PA Dept of Motor Vehicles and ask then what the procedure is in getting a title when before it was not required.


Also might contact NY DMV to see what has to be done for transferring ownership when the state (PA) did not require a title. Most states are aware of the other states that do not require a title to an older car.

Do a search on you tube ( Vt title) I’ve done this many years ago on my 38 knucklehead . You will have to trailer the car to get Vin check . You can use your address VT don’t care .

My 1942 Ford only had a bill of sale when I moved back to Pennsylvania. I used Shook Legal, Ltd. in Lewisburg, PA to get a title. He specializes in old car law. Perhaps a little more expensive than going some of the other routes but you won't have problems after.
You might want to call Brian and see what he recommends.
If it is a PA registration if you go to a Notary, you Dad may be able to file for a duplicate title if PA still has records that far back. Key piece of information would be if the title number is still legible on the registration. My brother went thru that process on his car which had not been registered since 1979 but he did have the renewal app and a bill of sale from when he bought the car. You might have better luck in New York because NY did not use titles until 1972. If you have a registration from 1954 you should have no problem.

I'll look into the VT option.

On the NY side, while the titling may be easiest, my read on a few sites indicates they aren't too friendly on the classic street rod idea.

PA allows no hood as long as the fan is shrouded, no fender requirement, no bumpers, etc. Something tells me NY isn't going to allow that. I could be wrong, and won't be insulted if someone sets me straight.

NY has no idea what type of car you are trying to register.
My opinion is stay in NY. Registration era car, not title era car.
Take and use all existing paperwork and use it .
Your last name is same as Dad’s last name . Last guy to register car.
Get all necessary paperwork from NYS DMV , fill it out .
Write a short direct wording of family car history.
Understand Dad is elderly. If at all possible take him to NYS DMV.
Either way, most likely you walk out with a “ Non Transferable” Registration.
Meaning you can not sell with that paperwork.
60-90 days later , NYS DMV will send you a “ Transferable “ registration.

Stay in NY, work with the paperwork you have .
Then if you are in Penn. , transfer NY Reg to Penn. reg.

All Vin numbers are now registered with a Federal agency, since 2019. Oregon joined in 2020 and a duplicated '36 FORD number showed up. It was resolved. This story was on HAMB. Newc

SSFFNOMAD is correct I would guess, every state is different. If you have anything with your dads name with a 32 serial number on a registration it should be easy peasy. Its a 32 ford, thats it, skip the street rod jive

I'd not use the term "Street Rod". It sort of implies a car built from aftermarket parts none of which were ever near a Ford factory.

Yours is the same early Ford that was last registered in 1954. You are merely re-registering it after a period of inactivity.

if you register it in ny you have to pay for reg. every year. you have to have it inspected every year. in pa you do not if you are going to keep it do pa you will save money . ny land of tax

from titling hundreds of cars, stay with NY- much easier.
PA is problematic and VT, well the 6% tax on NADA will kill you.

this is from 15 yrs experience.

as an example- nada for a 32 roadster is 49k

so for arguments sake, 50k x .6 % and VT will only want to take 3000. from you for sales tax...............

I don't know how other states do it, but in MN. if you want to put "Collector"Plates OR "Street Rod" plates on the old car or pickup, you pay $150 for the plates and the Tax, even if you paid a million dollars for it. When you transfer it, transfer fee is $35.00.

If it's an old car or pickup that you've had in your name for over One year,
then you just pay $15.50 for the Street Rod or Collector plate, and pay the
$35 fee to transfer, so the new title has this new info on it. NO sales tax.

Lanny, We have it good in Minnesota, mainly due to the legislative activity by the M.S.R.A. Unfortunately, I don't think it is nearly as good anywhere else.
