1939 deluxe gear shift
I would like to purchase a new shift knob for the 39: is the proper size 3/8 - 24?

Believe that's right. There's a Worlds Fair edition available from Dennis Carpenter through the Early V8 club you might want to check out.

I believe the thread is 5/16-24 NF The reproduction knobs are nice and available through the V8 Foundation also.

Re: 1939 deluxe gear shift
Simple! Screw-off the old knob that you want to replace anyway. Then, simply see if a 5/16-24 (fine thread) bolt will thread into it. Not TOO hard to figure-out! DD

Re: 1939 deluxe gear shift
ALL real car guys have umpteen-dozens of 5/16" and 3/8" bolts layin' around in the garage/shop/bolt bin. You saying you REALLY don't have a 5/16" fine-thread bolt layin' around? DD

Re: 1939 deluxe gear shift
They are 5/16 NF thread. I have about 20 different knobs in my collection as well as one on my '40 pickup.

Re: 1939 deluxe gear shift
My mistake, 30-9. It is 5/16, 24nf. You don't have to go down to the hardware with your old one, just order up one you like from a parts supplier you trust. It may come with a nut that goes on the shifter first. This will allow you adjust the height and center the knob if it is one with a center script or medallion. Otherwise, just screw off the old one and screw on the new one!!! Sorry for the confusion.

Re: 1939 deluxe gear shift
Just a further thought. You might want to add a "thread gauge" to your tool box. One of mine came with a tap and die set and I bought a Starrett #472 that measures just about anything I stumble across. They are not expensive and I use mine a lot....very handy to have working on your '39.
