Oil filler tube with no baffles
I just noticed my oil filler tube on my 28 has no baffles. Where did it come from? Originals all had baffles. I think it might be the 32-34 one because it has a piece of foam in the cap.

Re: Oil filler tube with no baffles
all of the A filler tubes should have baffles.also do away with the foam it will cause the crank case to build pressure and blow oil out the rear main. you need to change the tube out with the correct tube and cap.

Re: Oil filler tube with no baffles
The 33-34 were the same size where they fit into the block but the body was a lot larger in diameter. Could be a piece of tubing that was stuck into the hole or someone in the past thinking it would improve something took the baffles out. Without a photo hard to tell. The foam was probably used to prevent a lot of blow by. People put copper chore boy scrubbing pads in for somewhat the same reason.

Re: Oil filler tube with no baffles
Actually, the earliest Model A's, around the first 200 vehicles had filler tubes without baffles.

He has a 28 so maybe it's one of the 200?

Turns out the foam was some kind of red steel wool padding. I took them out because I think it will improve a rear main leak I have. The diameter of the tube is stock size so it is not a 33-34.

Re: Oil filler tube with no baffles
This is a new piece of info I have never heard of and could not find in the JS. Where did it come from?

Re: Oil filler tube with no baffles
I like to use a piece of copper scrub pad, keeps the oil mist in the block without building any pressure. That hint came from AER.

Re: Oil filler tube with no baffles
If need be, just put an old sock over the pipe while running. Never put the pads as said above..

Re: Oil filler tube with no baffles
Missed it. So is it possible to make one of these easily?

Re: Oil filler tube with no baffles
Oh to make a correction, the 32 pipe looked the same as A only taller.
While this might have been revised as my copy is (needs to be updated I think LOL ) 1997, it is on page A-2 in mine and would be for only the first 200 cars. That looks to be just a piece of exhaust pipe cut to length. I would worry with out the upset, it could work its way in to the engine. The upset would be a swedged area about an 1 inch or so up from the bottom to keep it from going in any more then to hold it in place. I would suggest just looking for a proper one, should not be that hard to find.

I do have another original but I think one of the baffles is slightly bent and one end of the tube is dented a bit. Is all this stuff worth fixing or should I find another?

Re: Oil filler tube with no baffles
Update: took the tube out and it looks exactly like a stock pipe but there are no baffles. Took another pipe I had and painted it and the cap and we are back in business. I don't understand why somebody would put a pipe without baffles in. This whole thing has made ME baffled!

To be baffled
OR To be UNBAFFLED ... That is the question |

It was more exhausting than baffling.

Re: Oil filler tube with no baffles
Your car is not Canadian by any chance? My early Canadian roadster *CA67* has the identical filler pipe.

Re: Oil filler tube with no baffles
My car is Canadian! Early 28 Canadian car that unfortunately had the engine replaced some times ago with a 31. If I remember correctly, I thought the JS said that Canadian cars used the same filler pipes as US production?

Re: Oil filler tube with no baffles
Steel wool in filler cap is a bad idea.
Water vapor collects in steel wool which rusts the steel then small pieces of steel fall into the oil pan ... not good for the bearings. |

Re: Oil filler tube with no baffles
I took it out and the car seems to not leak as much oil, it can breathe now. I don't have problems with blow by so I guess I don't need a bandaid fix like that.

Re: Oil filler tube with no baffles
I think putting ANYTHING in the oil filler Cap or TUBE is just PLAIN STUPID !!.. As Stated before, If need be to stop blow by on the fire wall etc. re-build the engine or put a sock over the cap & tube with a band of your choice to hold it in place.. When dirty enough, just put in in your wife`s wash !! Then Run !!
