Is there any difference between ford and mercury starters for 1950.

I believe there is only one starter for all.

Starters for automatics are different IIRC.

No difference, as Tony suggested.

The Ford-O-Matic/Merc-O-Matic starters that came out in 1951 are the odd ball. All other 8BA family are the same basic item with some minor variations that don't affect fit.

The Ford-O-Matic/Merc-O-Matic starters have a longer shaft for the armature. All else is the same as the other flathead starters.
