Re: Ford production Facts book
This book is a "must have" if you are interested in originality. These guys were Ford employees and had access to engineering records, drawings and actual release notes. A lot of info on interior trim details including materials, various woodgrain patterns and when they were changed during production. This book has info not included in the wonderful 32 book by Dave Rehor.
I have both and used them in my 32 "project". |

Re: Ford production Facts book
A great book and I use it all the time. Like most human endeavors, it has errors, particularly with regards to '32s. It is understandable given that neither author had any hands-on experience with the subject vehicles until after the book was published (their first love being Model As). Like all reference books, use it with care and a critical mind.

Re: Ford production Facts book
Here is the cover of that fantastic book "The Early Ford V8 as Henry Built It" by Edward P Francis and George DeAngelis. Every Early Ford V8 enthusiast should have a copy of it in their library. Highly recommended. |

Re: Ford production Facts book
Simple fact is you need both Dave's books and the Francis/Deangelis book if you are serious about 32 or early Ford stuff in general. Dave's books serve as your #1 go to for restoration of 32 period. The Francis book is interesting in several ways, one is the info that is not in Dave's books but in the fact they were at Ford in the engineering department. Although not there during the 32 period, they do have real life knowledge of how the engineering and documentation process actually works in a large manufacturing company. I came from this kind of background (not at Ford), but the "way it really was" should be enlightening to those that like research in this old stuff. A simple fact that they expose is if you solely research drawings from engineering you do not get the whole story. A signed off drawing doesn't mean it happened. The whole process of drawing sign offs, release notes ,manufacturing engineering documents and finally production engineering documents and implementation schedules need to be reviewed if you are trying to really figure something out. Add in errors and omissions and the view can be further clouded. So for you guys that do your own snooping and have copies of the drawings from Benson, be somewhat careful. The fact that a drawing was signed and released on such and such date may not mean that much without the other stuff.

Re: Ford production Facts book
Good point, although with the Ford engineering drawings there normally is a counterpart engineering release document that accompanies it. But, as indicated, the existence of a drawing per se does not always mean that what is depicted went into production. Then there is the maddening habit they had when minor running changes were made to just alter the original drawing rather than make a new drawing, thereby obliterating the original configuration on the drawing.

Re: Ford production Facts book
That is a good book. I found a copy on the internet.
I don't mean to be patronizing, however I'm thankful for folks like David and Kube that have done a lifetime of research on early Fords. Even if you are not a hard core restorer, it's fascinating to know how these cars where built by Ford. Their information often makes our projects much easier. |
