Default Roadster package tray ???

Do you need to use a package tray in a 31 roadster? To rest the wood seat frame against? I've heard some guys remove them ???

Yep, done that way originally
“Need” kinda throws me because I’m sure you could “engineer” a way not to…..as. “Some guys” must have done

It’s a very small metal extension not like coupe. It’s two pieces and slightly adjustable.
Actually not like a typical package tray so the name package tray maybe a misnomer. I don’t have part diagram. But does tie the belt rail to the wooded rear seat frame

IMHO, the "package tray" provides some structural benefit. If you are going to cut off the horizontal flange consider installing a horseshoe shaped piece of 3/4 x 3/4 .080 wall square steel tubing from door post to door post under the vertical part of the package tray and any other flanges. This is essentially what we do on our fiberglass roadsters and it really stiffens up the cockpit compared to an original Ford or B'ville body.

In the rearward position mine is only 2” or so wide. The roadster b Pilars tend to widen with use and the package shelf probably adds strength.

John
I put my sunglasses in our so called package tray on our roadster and they blew out of the car at road speed. Good for a screwdriver, etc. that's heavy.
