Default Oil Filters

I'm thinking about taking the oil filter off my stock 85 hp when I swap out distributors. I don't see the point of keeping it on. The oil get changed every 800-1000 miles anyway all it's doing is reducing oil pressure. What do you guys think?

I agree. The normal street use flathead with the new oils and a regular change should not need a filter. The engine and engine compartment looks better without it. JMO

Maybe you should try a hi flow, hi quality filter. Try a Gibbs or a Royal Purple.

For the little good the original filters do, I don't honestly beleive you'd do any serious harm to your engine without one. If you do in fact change the oil every 800 - 1000 miles, any harm will surely not show up until long after you and I are gone.
If you drive the car quite a bit, perhaps a magnetic drain plug...

Was not aware that Gibbs or Royal Purple made canister type oil filters.
Why would you put a hi flow filter on a resticted flow oil system?

I have heard old timers talk about disconnecting the lines and using the filter as a "toolbox". Ad some padding so the tools dont slosh around and keep on truckin. What do you guys think of that?

I keep the tools under the seat, a lot more fit. In a towel, they don't rattle... Karl

I would think you would want to run the cleanest oil you could. That would be a filter.Mybe not?

On one of my 8ba's i put the 95% oil filter system in but on my last engine I didn't want to do the 95% but wanted filtered oil and didn't want the filter mounted on the cylinder head. I installed the high output M15 oil pump which is more oil than the engine needs, so I installed a vibration resistant needle valve where the oil line exits the engine block to filter and installed a remote filter by the oil pan bolt flange near rear of engine and ran the oil line from needle valve to it and from filter back into engine through original fitting. Ran the engine up to warm temperature to get the oil thin then opened the valve to the desired oil pressure I want to run (a little over 50psi at highway speeds) and still good pressure at idle. Now I have good pressure to engine and instead of the oil bypassing through the pressure relief valve in the oil pump the extra oil is being filtered.

my '47 doesn't have one and i've had it a few years....it looks to be the original motor or a very old rebuild......no problems yet. remember it only filters SOME of the oil.

Modern detergent oil is designed to be used with a filter as the detergent keeps the trash in suspension so it can be filtered out. So with out a filter the trash is circulating constantly through the engine. Its probably better if you don't want a filter to use non detergent oil, if you can find it. Then deal with the sludge, etc.
