Default identify crank gear

I've torn down two 8BA style engines and they have different thrust gears.

If I'm looking at the timing dot on the crank gear, which way does the gear tooth angle as it runs towards the back, left or right, for a forward thrust gear?

JSeery has the evidence above. Most likely, the one you found to be early style was running an early cam. DD

Thanks, looks like the 8BA tooth angles off the the right.

They both had EA cams in them with side mounted distributors.

I think I read that the early motors thrusted toward the block and when Henry F. built the engine with the dizzy up the top, he changed it so that the cam was thrusting against the timing cover. This required that the gears were cut the opposite way. I can't remember the logic but when I read it it made sense.
