Bellhousing for a 368 Y Block Part #
I need to verify the part and/or the casting number for a Bellhousing of a Lincoln or Big Truck 368 Y Block. Could anyone please help?
Thanks. Rick. |

Re: Bellhousing for a 368 Y Block Part #
Only # I could find was for a standard trans with OD, said to fit 57-59 368 & 383 cid.
Part # PB9M-6392-B. I don't have a truck parts book for those years, cannot confirm if it's same as this item. I found it in the '56-'59 Merc Parts Book. |

If PB9M 6392-B STD & OD 368 Y and 383 MEL and 430 MEL share bellhousings: I
know and have done a FE or FT will work on a 383 / 430 then it should work on a 368. |

Re: Bellhousing for a 368 Y Block Part #
The MERC 368 only used the ST bell in specially prepared 1957 M-335 cars. Very limited production. CRAGAR made (also FORD vendor) a bell for conversion also. Very hard to find now. The truck bells are heavy cast and have the mounting ears on them. Hard to convert to pass car.
The 58/60 MEL had the same bell pattern as the FE. I have info somewhere describing adapting an FE bell to the 368. All of this has been discussed on the net and you may find info with GOOGLE. My machine took a nose dive and am still trying to resurrect lost info.

Re: Bellhousing for a 368 Y Block Part #
The big Y blocks have their own bell pattern and most were made for trucks or the earlier Lincolns that still had the Lincoln Y-block. Once that MEL was out then there was a cross over with the FE so that they could use the same or similar transmissions till early 61. I don't think that parts book is correct putting a large Y with an MEL block. I'd guess it's a miss print. The Cragar or Stroppe bell housings were the only ones made for these big engines in cars.
There are several offerings for automatic transmissions to be adapted but no one is offering standard trans types. The truck engines were for F700 and F800 applications so no light duty bells were made for trucks and the big Y. An FE scattershield could likely be modified by welding and/or redrilling of certain holes. This would affect at least one of the alignment dowels and as many as six of the bolt holes. An adapter could be fabricated to fit the big Y with an FE block type bellhousing but it would likely require a crank spacer the same thickness to get the dimensions back. This won't be an easy adaptation but it can be done if a person wants to go there. This link has a photo of the Cragar piece. They show up now and then. http://forums.y-blocksforever.com/Topic84831.aspx You might check with this guy but no guarantees since I don't know who he is. https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=273611 Last edited by rotorwrench; 10-25-2020 at 12:32 PM. |
