Things to do after the wife leaves the house.
I have new manifolds for my Model A, and went with the cast blast hi temp paint. Directions say to bake at 400* + to cure paint. I figured this was one of those scenarios where its better to ask forgiveness than permission!
1. vent fan on hi 2. bake at 400*+ right when she leaves for work.... with any luck she'll never know unless I tell her! (which is likely). The progress continues! I'm getting pretty antsy to get my coupe back on the road!! |

That's a good one. Try curing powder coat in there next. The next cassarole might taste a little odd.

I remember when i was restoring my Harley years ago. I wrinkle painted the piston barrels and baked them in oven when the wife went to work. Could not get the smell out, she arrived home, i got my butt chewed, Never forgot that and neither did she. Good luck with your project. I mean your wife.

Re: Things to do after the wife leaves the house.
Well the good news is I'm done and its back in the garage with no paint smell in the house. I let the paint dry a couple hours before I put it in the oven so that might have helped. I stuck it in for an hour at 440* and it looks nice! I touched it with a brush and it seems the paint is completely cured and hard - looks like dull new cast iron. Glad it didn't stink up the house / oven or it might have gotten ugly! Once it cools I'll bolt it to my freshly painted intake manifold.

Hey,
I've got a picture just like that! Only mine was done where I work after hours and luckily no one complained. |

This was in 1994. I actually use the ovens for cooking more than Susan so it wasn't much of an issue. Also, I was curing the paint at a much lower temperature so the odors weren't too severe. It certainly raised some eyebrows however!

Re: Things to do after the wife leaves the house.
The results are in. No lingering paint smell in the oven either.
I put a coat of anti-seize on the mating surfaces and some anti-seize on the bolt threads as well. It doesn't look like I'll need the manifolds machined either because they fit good and flat. (which a new pair should) |

Re: Things to do after the wife leaves the house.
Looks really nice, my lady has the nose of a blood hound!!!!!!!!!!!!!There is now way in hell I could get away with that. Just for giggles and grins one day, right after she left for work, i opened a can of pvc glue in the center hall, didn't use any and only kept the cap off for about 30 seconds, she got home 9 hours later and asked what that chemical smell was, i guess its good the garage is detached. I do keep an old gas grill for such things, but have only cooked old shocks in it. Not to be picky, but it looks like head stud 8 and 9 were swapped....

My mother could smell (or at least said she did) anything and everything that my dad & I had going on out in the garage -- even if there wasn't anything.

Re: Things to do after the wife leaves the house.
being the matrimonial expert that I am, I recommend the gas grille option instead of the kitchen range.
or get an old range on Craigs List for $25-50; you can sell it easily later if you choose. reminds me of Brent Terry's hillbilly powder coating oven.....

While she is out..... Dish washers are also indispensible.
