That would be July 1926 number. Not sure where you got the information of number not going that high as there were over 15,000,000 T's made up to end of production in the US.

Nitpicking here: VIN stands for "Vehicle Identification Number", so to say 'Vin number' is redundant. you're actually saying "vehicle identification number number". Now I better go out the garage and actually do something constructive!

In the same vain, a lot of people seem to have a hot water heater in their basement.

"hot water heater in their basement" That's where mine is. Maybe redundant but I bet the vast majority of people say it that way. VIN has become a word in out fluctuating English language so it is just said that way, Vin number.

So why are you heating hot water in your basement?!

LOL because it is a heater that heats cold water to make it hot. Or that's just how many/I say it.

So then, what you have in your basement is really a "cold water heater", right? Just checked the unit in my garage. The various labels plastered on it all read simply "water heater". Ah, the English language can be fun to mess with!

That works. LOL Bet if you ask for a part for your cold water heater, most people would look at you with their mouth open wondering what you were talking about.

Whatever happened to just calling it "engine number" and "chassis number"? Before the chassis number was stamped onto the frame (1925 I believe), just the engine number was used to register your title. I have a build sheet for my early Cadillac and they called the engine number the "serial number" and the license number was a Selden Patent Plate number. I had two dealer replacement engine blocks (1926/27 style and a 1929 A) that had a bare area where the engine number would typically be found. Dealer repair shops would have stamped the replacement block with the original engine number. Most just swapped out replacement engines and did not bother with correct numbers.

Don't know about other states, but the serial number boxs on our titles list it as VIN. Which is what it is. VIN and serial number being both the same in this case and most people understand and use the shortened version VIN.

In a similar vein, those people are vain when bragging about their vane-less water heater.

I think VIN came into use as the "official" acronym for the Vehicle Identification Number when the format of that number was standardized in 1981.
